Anosognosia: the inability to accurately perceive one's own mental illness. Lucas doesn't have much insight into his struggles. Self awareness hurts. Far better to focus on external causes that one can't control, like human greed and flatbills.

I don’t feel bad for Lucas specifically because he’s you know, a piece of shit, but I do feel bad for anyone suffering from mental illness. Does his mental illness excuse his behavior? Fuck no. He’s still a creep and a shit person, but it hurts watching his illness get worse. And if this was 4-5 years ago I would think there’s a chance at a happy ending, but now I don’t think there is one. I’ll still laugh at his stupid bullshit, but there is still a little pain behind the laugh.

Have you tried cultivating the pain behind the laugh? I find it makes the laugh better. And the laugh makes the pain greater. Consider not just Lucas's pain, much of which is self-inflicted, but also the anguish of those who care for him. I know his mother is an unpopular figure in Wernology, but she's watched her baby boy disintegrate over time. Ouch.
