With each installment, the FAST & FURIOUS franchise has become increasingly ridiculous as it throws the laws of physics out the window, but one thing the series hasn't done yet is go to outer-space. In a pre-COVID world, the ninth FAST & FURIOUS film would have debuted in theaters back in May, but as with just about every other film out there, its release was pushed back due to the pandemic.

FAST & FURIOUS 9, which seems to be titled F9, deals with Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) confronting the sins of his past when his team goes up against the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver they've ever encountered: Dom's forsaken brother, Jakob (John Cena). Much of the ensemble cast has returned for F9, including Chris "Ludacris" Bridges as Tej Parker, and the actor spoke on SiriusXM's The Jess Cagle Show where he may have insinuated that the upcoming sequel could finally take the franchise to space. Co-host Julia Cunningham said, "I don't even know creatively what they could come up with to wow us, even though I know they do every time. I'm like, space has to be involved, submarines, I don't even know. In my mind I can't imagine what happens in the next movie." To which Ludacris responded:

"You just said something very important. I will say that you are very intuitive, because you said something right, but I'm not going to give it away."

When Cunningham exclaimed that she bet it was space, Ludacris put his hand over his mouth. "I don't know. I don't know what you said," he teased. While Ludacris could be speaking of something else, I will be shocked if the franchise doesn't go to space before all is said and done. Shocked, I say! Although the release of FAST & FURIOUS 9 has been pushed back, Ludacris said that the additional time gives the editors even more time to perfect the film; additionally, "If there is a Fast 10 and 11, and you understand the time the creatives, the people who are writing these scripts right now have to make these the best possible sequels of all time — I can't even imagine. That is what I am thinking." FAST & FURIOUS 9 is slated to hit theaters on April 2, 2021.

All that comes to mind now:

I kinda doubt they would go that crazy with but I wouldn't count it out completely.

Too bad the Machete sequel bombed and we never got the trilogy.

Their mistake was not simply doing the space movie as the sequel and thinking it really needed to be a trilogy.

I would have seen it had it been in space, but since it wasn't I just didn't care.

The newest trailers showed a resurrection and a car using a bridge post as a grappling hook. They aren't quite ready for "2 Fast 2 Furious 2 Tha Past", but Space seems like the next logical step.

I've always imagined that Mission: Impossible would end up in space one day (with Tom Cruise doing a jump à-la Felix Baumgartner).

To be honest, ever since Elon Musk launched his Tesla into space I wanted the movie do the same thing but with a Dodge Charger and Vin Diesel in a spacesuit.

In a just world, there's no way this series would still be going. The first film was little more than a poor imitation of Point Break, and the sequels have somehow managed to get progressively more contrived from there.

Who actually goes to watch these films, anyway? The PG-13 rating surely bars anyone immature enough to find them engaging from being able to see them.
