I disagree that the fetishization of prison rape as a part of the punishment is exclusively American, it’s not.

Even in the UK, where prisons are essentially rehab centres, people will still fetishize prisoners getting raped.

American prisons are thunderdomes designed solely to keep prisoners away from the rest of society, even though most Western prisons focus mostly on rehabilitation, the American thunderdome fantasy lives on.

although there are many other countries with prison rape cultures far, far worse than America ever was. If American prisons are thunderdomes then Middle Eastern prisons are rape arenas.

Citation needed. When someone is behaving antisocially, I don't think cramming them in a horrific little box with other antisocial people helps them much.

I won't say that getting rid of prisons completely is the answer, but for the people who aren't complete pieces of shit and might be capable of reform, I think the kind of punitive and lengthy prison sentences that are the norm in America does more harm than good.

I was thinking about minimum security prisons in the EU, which have far more resources and amenities than American prisons.

naturally maximum security/federal prisons are going to be hell holes no matter what you do.
