For those that don't know. It's actually funny you mentioned drew devault, and hyprland just by accident. Along with being involved with Wayland, he has a window manager. Sway he developed. It's a copy of the i3 window manager. But made for the Wayland display server, instead of the x11 display server that came before x11.

For the non Linux autists, a window manager is what handles the windows on your screen, adds decorations to them (not necessarily but if they have a title bar and borders that the window manager), and handles where they are placed on the screen, things like that. Every OS has them as part of the desktop. But on Linux you can use minimal window managers that standalone without the rest of the desktop stuff.

So he is making his copy of the i3 window manager. It was the most popular Wayland compositor (that's what window managers are called for Wayland, I won't explaining why is too much for this post) for a while.

Then hyprland comes along. The developer is a young guy, and is very active in the development and implementation of features in this new window manager. So he ends up adding a bunch of extra features, and also starts helping with development for some aspects that Wayland itself was lacking in. And because of that hyprland pretty quickly becomes the most popular Wayland compositor.

Not long after this, Drew devault decided this new programer is heckin problematic. He let people lightly make fun of trannies in his discord server. And someone made a joke saying they were racist!!

So he decided to make a post called "Hyprland is a toxic community"

Where he takes a bunch of screenshots and lets everyone know how bad his top competitor is. And why they should stop using hyprland, if you aren't a Nazi. And maybe while you are doing that, you should give sway a try.

So the hyprland dev responds. He doesn't completely suck the troon dick. His response is here.

Because of that he ends up getting banned from the free software foundation by a top level troon (from what I recall it might have been another foundation).

I wanted to share this story. Because fuck Drew Devault. He is one of the most cancerous forces in free and open source software. The guy is a complete piece of shit. Him, and people like him, and surrounding him are setting FOSS projects back by years constantly. The things he does. It is hard to believe there isn't some ulterior motive there, because the things he does don't make any sense if he isn't getting something from it.
