Essentially, it was Infighting between Christians who were incapable of looking at the big picture and unifying to keep Islam out of Europe.Into Europe!
First the Catholics and the Orthodox fucked eachother over constantly, allowing the turks to take over Anatolia, then Greece, then large parts of the Balkans, over several hundred years. Then any attempts at fighting off the Muslim push deeper into Europe was fucked with by the protestants - The protestants had a saying, "Liever Turks dan Paaps" , or "Rather Turkish than Papist". They would side with the turks 10 times out of 10 because they hated Catholics more than muslims.
You also had catholics backtabbing other catholic nations who were trying to fight off the turks over small territorial gains. Essentially, Christian monarchs put small, temporary gains over the big picture for hundreds of years, while muslims put the big picture first (while still squabbling like savages.) Same shit that is going on now, basically.
Unfortunately, pride and greed got in the way of any attempt at managing to force Islam to fuck off, and it goes all the way back to the First Crusade, where the Orthodox asked Catholics for help, and the Catholics answered.
The Catholics upheld their part of the bargain, forcing the Turks to fuck off and taking the Holy Land. However an English knight named Stephen du Blois (Father of the future english king, btw) had a tantrum when he wasn't picked to become leader of the Crusaders and went home. He met with the emperor, lied and told them that the situation was hopeless when he was returning to England, and the Emperor decided that "Oh well if its hopeless then we won't waste our time helping the Crusaders.".
So when the Crusaders won, despite Stephen saying they wouldn't, the Emperor came in and demanded the Catholics uphold their side of the bargain and swear fealty to him... Despite him not upholding his side of the bargain and helping them. They told him to fuck off, and without any powerful allies the Crusader States eventually fell to the muslims, and the Byzantines lost the land the Crusaders took back from the turks because nobody wanted to help them since they proved that they couldn't keep their word of "We will back you up". All thanks to a fucking English knight lying because he didn't get to become King of Jerusalem.
Repeat this kind of bullshit for the next nine centuries and you end up with a significant chunk of Europe under muslim control and converted to islam.
Hope this answers your question.
