There's some drama that surfaced recently regarding the FAA's hiring practices for Air Traffic Controllers.
The tldr; is that they had every applicant fill out a biographical questionnaire with a 90% fail rate that was specifically designed to filter out whites.
Statements like "my lowest grade in high school was science" awarded points when answered affirmatively. Others included "I was good at sports" or if the applicant had been unemployed recently. Some guy who aced the legit, 8-hour cognitive assessment test wasn't hired because he failed the questionnaire, and started a class action lawsuit v. Mayor Pete because of it.
This revealed a long-running plot (started in 2000) to diversify the all-too-white ATC profession. The National Black Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees (NBCFAE) was the driving force behind this, and after some lobbying they got the FAA to establish a review board that would look into the job's diversity issues. This board found that the 8-hour cognitive test was the biggest barrier to non-white, especially black lmao, applicants. Their recommendation was to use a biographical questionnaire to maximize diversity in hiring.
This was rolled out in 2014, and even people who passed the cognitive test were required to take it, to general outrage. In addition, the test could be taken at home with 0 supervision. So, the NBCFAE begann coaching their members on how they should fill it out. When this was revealed, the FAA basically shrugged and did nothing to address it:

Imagine working through college and putting in hundreds of hours to prepare for the job, only to get snubbed because science was, in fact, your best subject in high school.

Oh my god. One of my cousins was in ATC school in the mid 2010s and he did not make it, he still works in the airline industry but ATC was his dream and failing at that completely changed his life. I don't know if that's the exact reason why he failed, I don't think he knows either, but I'll always wonder if it was because of that. That's fucking nuts.
