How would you test it? Something like finding twins that have a similar educational background, field of work and income. Somehow force one to get married while forcing the other to remain single, recording their incomes over a period of years and then repeating that on multiple twins. Some twins would have both got married and some would have both remained single without interface so the idea of unmarriable men is factored in.
That experimental is never going to happen. Even if we hand-wave the ethical concerns, the logistics of finding twins with such a similar career starting point is untenable.

Even if I agreed that men don't start to excel before marriage, marriage would still be a measure of success/fitness, by predisposing those more capable to more relationships. Why would human marriage and partner selection exist outside of this paradigm, when partner selection has been a fundamental part of evolution for the past 100 million+ years? Or is everyone trying to argue that human partner selection has no bearing on physical reality? That it’s totally random? That doesn’t make much sense. You have seen it with your own eyes; how likely are lolcows to be in stable relationships? Also Predictors of success appear well before marriage, through standardized testing etc. Most people complete their vocational training before they are married.
