I was listening to yesterday's show but I noticed what may be a misunderstanding about Daniel Larson's fate.
Right now, he's been found unable to assist in his own defense. That means he has to go to a mental hospital until if and when he's well enough to assist.
The hospital staff will have a goal of rehabilitating him for trial.
During this time, he may be brought along to shaperoned outings in public. This can be a big issue because where the patient is going and when they're going is protected by medical privacy laws, so the family of a murder victim may see their loved one's killer randomly at a swimming pool or a park. They also sometimes escape during these outings.
Anyway, this is much different than being found "not guilty by reason of insanity" at trial, which actually involves ajudication. In that case, his fate would be what you said.
With what he has now, he could be found fit to stand trial in six month or a year (or never, to be fair).
I apologize a lot if I'm totally wrong about this or if someone else has commented about it.
