Mad Max thread

Loved this movie on multiple levels, but if you see it in theaters (which I'd recommend), don't get a soda. The action starts about three minutes out of the gate, and doesn't really ease up too much for the next hour and a half. I was kind of exhausted after that point, but then they let you have a bit of a break and finish very strong. Not to mention that the set designer and costumer should win awards for this one.

I saw Fury Road yesterday and thought it was pretty good. The only real niggle I had with the film was I thought Tom Hardy was a bit miscast as Mad Max.

I liked Tom Hardy as Bane and I think he does well as imposing villain characters. But in Fury Road I felt he came off a bit too much as a thug. By comparison with Mel Gibson's performance in Mad Max 2 he comes off like a man who used to be an honest nice guy who has since been reduced to surviving in a world without laws. Which naturally goes with the Old West motifs the series has.

Actually, I really liked Tom Hardy in this role, because I think they were going for less "Old West" and more "Lord of the Flies." He did an amazing job showing the "mad" of Max without dragging the pace down with heavy-handed exposition on his tragic backstory. His monosyllabic reticence and brute force in the first act don't fit the model of "renegade cowboy," but they line up perfectly with "recently-escaped, traumatized slave with blood loss." That aspect, I thought, was well-handled and believable.

TL;DR - Fury Road is a well-acted, well-produced, balls-to-the-wall action film and you should see it on a big screen. Trust me. Watch this movie and you will never regret rolling up a bard ever again.

I think this sounds good. I haven't seen any Tom Hardy films, so this might be a good jumping on point for me.
His 2011 movie Warrior is a pretty powerful action drama that revels in its clichés rather than being weighed down by them, you should definately check it out.

Its a 2hr movie that is about 90 min of car battles. The other 30min is devoted to just the right amount of world building, so you see there is something there but the movie never infodumps on you. Also it pisses off mras if you see it.

Also there is a guy who plays a flamethrower guitar. Did I mention that?

agreed, but only because I was distracted by Tom Hardy's beautiful DSLs the whole time.

I've seen Fury Road today, and speaking as someone who's never seen any of the other Mad Max films, I really enjoyed it.

Makes me want to watch the original movies now.

I can recommend this movie enough. Best film I've seen in years

@Lipitor recently brought up Mad Max Fury Road in chat and didn't know that most of the scenes in the film were practical.

Someone edited a compilation of scenes in the film and compared them to how they looked while they were being filmed.

The Director of Photography also talked about how the film was shot in a specific way that they paid great attention to where the viewer's eyes were
Here's a video about this more in depth
It's also worth noting Fury Road was storyboarded many years before the script was designed. Which explains why the film has so little dialogue and focuses so greatly on it's very visuals.

How are people fucking excited for Furiosa? Fury Road was one of the worst films I've ever seen, and by far the worst of the entire franchise. Yay, more atrocious CG effects and color grading and STRONK FEMIniST icon!11
The film barely used CGI you clown. Almost all the stunts and 80% of the effects are choreographed practical effects.

Mad Max should've ended in 1985. George Miller is George Lucas; he has no idea why his series was popular to begin with.

I think that Fury Road is an amazing action movie. Yeah, yeah, I'm aware that there's some stupid "culture war" shit surrounding it, but at no point in the film did I think that Max wasn't the main character. He's the catalyst for the group's success, very much like in The Road Warrior.

The Road Warrior, Beyond Thunderdome, and Fury Road have one huge thing in common: Max finds himself accidentally in the middle of a situation during the post-Apocalypse, and he has to get himself out of it while also helping people in the process. Fury Road 110% continues that tradition.

That said, as much as I still love Fury Road, I'm not at all hyped for this movie. I would have much preferred a true Mad Max sequel (come on, you've got a great actor like Tom Hardy, what are you waiting for, George Miller?!). Who knows, it could be amazing, but I'm not planning to see it in theaters or anything.

The film was literally clad in the awful blue/orange you see overused in film posters, the entire way through. With some of the absolute worst day-for-night color grading I've ever seen. Nice try.

Cope harder, you shills.
