It's a really sad story, her mother died 8 days after giving birth to her and her Grandmother wasn't able to care for a newborn properly so she was put in an orphanage temporarily. It was never meant to be permanent - the orphanages can act as care homes and then return the child when they're a bit older.
Madonna claimed she takes Mercy to Malawi to learn about her culture and see her family and friends. Mercy's biological family say they lost all contact after the adoption - this was a few years ago now though, a lot of the talk about her died off in 2017. She's 16 now, maybe Madonna got bored enough of her to let her see her family
