Man i really dont like this crossover sets or Universe Beyond as its called. If it was something in a blue moon, sure, but now its like a constant and it would be cool if it was with IP's that would make sense like LoTR or Harry potter, but now we got shit like spongebob on the way. Honestly Mtg is looking to become the fortnite of Tcg's. It feels lile magic aint gonna be magic if this keeps up and its gonna be the game where [insert character] appear. I wanna say that i hate it, but despite my complaint i like the idea in concept, is just Wotc is fucking up the execution for me.

All they had to do was do One Universes Beyond Commander set of Godzilla Promo Style cards and everyone would be happy.

Already is for casual and EDH players

People like you with attitudes like yours are how we got into this situation to begin with and are why the problem is rapidly getting worse

Why become the Fortnite of TCG's when it already IS Fortnite?

Damn I never realized how caked up that bear character was until now.

All they had to do was show restraint. They started it out with a card that immediately slotted into Legacy Humans.
In retrospect I kind of think that is less of the of the people who made the rick card...and more along the lines of that they really never print playable Human lords, The last Humans list to top 8 (like a year ago KEK) doesn't even run it, they run Coppercoat Vanguards and General Kudro.

Wotc doesn't want to risk another elves.

Elves still get lords, and there's a lot of playable humans that would like a good lord or two in W that are on curve
Elves get lords because Individual Elves tend to not be that amazing on their own.

Humans aren't really allowed to get lords because as the baseline creature type they tend to have a large pool of good creatures that don't need pumped.

Coco humans are pretty solid tier 2 in Pioneer and would be an easy T1 if they got a decent fucking 2 mana lord. When I was grinding explorer I would palate cleanse myself from playing too much gearhulk or worldspine Creativity with Azban humans and later a modified version of this list created by our lord and savior Magic Squidward.

Personally I just try to pretend that all the wokeshit and ugly commercialized garbage the game has been involved with over the last several years doesn't exist, and consciously ignore it as much as possible. It's been working for me so far...MTG is such an important and nostalgic portion of my childhood that I think if I sat down and accepted the full extent of how badly this thing that I love has been warped I believe that might be just push me a little too close to gloomer territory. I already successfully ignored most of the world news over the last few years. I can do this too.

Like how?
You imply that if it was executed well, the idea would be good and you would be comfortable spending money on it. People dropping tons of money on UB SLs, EDH decks, and sets are why they keep making them. If they didn't sell well they'd stop making them.

I could agree with the "executed well" notion if all mechanically unique UB cards were silver bordered. The reprints can be black bordered and function like official alters/skins.

I'm willing to give a pass to D&D since both are fantasy, both are owned by WOTC, and the fact that MTG took heavy inspiration from D&D. By extension, I'm also willing to give a more hesitant pass to LOTR, since both D&D and MTG both took inspiration from it, though I can't deny the legendary and specifically named cards (like Troll of Khazad Dum) LOTR cards still feel out of place in MTG. Cards like Orcish Bowmasters don't bother me since that's a card that could exist in MTG as-is since MTG has Orcs.

When WOTC apologists like Tolarian Community College and Rhystic Studies start getting exasperated, it's bad. Really bad.
Harmful Opinions did a fantastic video where he watches TCC lament the state of the game and the sets slated for release next year. Watch it. It's good on so many levels.

For me the execution would be perfect if it was once in a blue moon and instead of making new cards with new mechanics or effects, it would just be alternative cards of already existing ones as you say. Regardless of execution, you and i know how niggercattle the community when it comes to comsuming, so its gonna sale whether we like it or not. I do believe theres a middle ground for U.B but that ship has sailed and now we are gonna get sets yearly from the looks of it and add more product fatigue.

What's even worse is they then do an Evil Dead SL and Ash in that is just a reprint of a non-legendary dude - not even a reprint of Rick or just a decent human creature.

That's somehow more insulting. Seeing which UB stuff is just a reskin and which gets something new and flavorful.

Check if there's a Premodern group in your area, almost guaranteed to be a bunch of gen Xers (and the odd boomer) who are equally disillusioned with all the stupid new shit, community or gameplay related. Oldschool is an option too, but it's basically a solved format (last I looked, anyway) and kiiiinda boring and shitty.

It's sad but it feels like the game is only enjoyable now if you have a tightly gatekept group of oldfags to play with, or it's vintage/legacy cube online. I used to daydream about teaching my kids to play when they're old enough, but I seriously doubt the game will be in any state that interests me, let alone them, once that time comes.

I think I would like Premodern because I heard that it is a bit like Extended which is what I used to play back when there was Type 1, Type 1.5 and Type 2 etc. My fav formats were 1.5 and Extended. Nowadays I just play Legacy and Modern but I'll have to learn Premodern, I assume it will just be in between those two, but I'm not 100% familiar with the format. Standard can suck a fat nut imo I haven't liked standard since forever

Premodern has a relatively well-known Tier One of Parallax Replenish, various Phyrexian Dreadnought builds, and various Terravore decks, but there's a lot of room to brew in tiers below that and at most small to mid-sized events people won't be trying to play sweaty decks. I'd highly recommend it.

There's also a small historical Type IIs community if you're into that sort of thing. There's one group that runs an annual webcam tournament series where each month is a new Standard, starting with Ice Age and ending with Odyssey-Onslaught. Personally, I'm looking for a community that does either Kami-Rav or Rav-Time Spiral Standards, but I haven't found a group yet.

Now that's cool. I'd be into something like that for sure
