This is feeling like war of the spark all over again but without any of the story set up (what little there was). I’m actually digging the concept of the phyrexian’s slowly completing the main planeswalkers we know and care about, but it feels rushed to do it this way. I would have preferred if they’d taken a few more sets to flesh the goals out, maybe give us a bit more behind the scenes stuff that isn’t buried in story articles. Can’t believe I long for the days of Ixalan’s storyline.
War of the Spark killed the character of Bolas by making him a retard, this seems to be the case now. From what I hear Ertai is back, but now he's a generic cackling evil fucker, whereas in the original story he was a a victim of circumstance and turned into a slave by Phyrexians. He didn't want to fuck over the Weatherlight crew because he was evil, he wanted to fuck them over because they left him behind and he was tortured so he had a grudge. He died, but now he's back and just comically evil for no reason instead of being a tragic figure.

You'd be fighting guys trying to Tooth and Nail (using tron of course, cause it was in that standard) and plop Kiki-Jiki and Darksteel Colossus out on you, copy him swing for 11. Next turn swing for 22.
Tooth and Nail, Myr Cube, and Death Cloud were all decks I played back then because I'm a hipster retard, and I don't think it was until Ravnica with Sky Hussar that Tooth really took off in Extended with Kiki. Skull Clamp was a mistake but maybe not Ravager once Artifact lands were gone. From what I remember Slide could actually keep up once Clamp was gone.

Yep sounds about right for standard at that time, then Jitte shows up and causes it's own set of problems.

Was Jitte that bad? Could be that I was still very young back then and didn't know shit besides very basic net decking, but I didn't really encounter that much compared to other shit that was rampant back then. The big memory I had of Jitte was I think I found online that a precon had it included and I thought I was a genius so I went to every card store in the area and the laughed at me when I asked if that had that precon in stock. Even back then people knew what was going on.

I don't frankly care that much about black aragon because I don't give a shit about lord of the rings, but this is pretty funny. Imagine paying so much for licensing rights, and then... I mean, most people associate lotr with the movies and the actors there, right? You just bin all of those and... here's some generic dude!
i've honestly never understood why so many people dislike higher power level standard
high power is fine when most things and archetypes can compete at high power
what you are referencing is the unbearable UG-dominance standard that was just people slamming value engines at each other or you dying on turn 3 to embercleave, spiced up here and there with a bit of cat oven. it was boring as shit, replaced by ultimatum-or-embercleave with cat oven, which was also boring as shit. 3feri was such a stupid mistake of a card

Sortof like how Khans enabled 4c goodstuff, so everyone was playing 4c goodstuff, and then abzan rhinotrain became half of the meta in its own time, and then temur energy was dumb. It just rarely works out that there's an interesting metagame, so you just hope the mirror is better. Modern pre-MH2, pioneer, vintage, legacy - even pauper all do a better job of having lots and lots of high-powered decks that keep each other in a sortof equilibrium.

I think the biggest issue here is that back in the day, wizards would print a foil to anything to got too strong before they’d ban anything. The more I think on it, the more it strikes me that they just aren’t doing that. They haven’t done it in years. I was mulling over if Loxodon Smiter would be good in pioneer if Liliana becomes a staple and remembered that it had initially been printed to be her foil. If the design team was more conscious about how powerful something was going in, they would be adding design ideas to future sets to help balance the meta, but that doesn’t sell cardboard (it would but not to the whales)

Well, based on overthinking things I deep dived into sideboarding against Thoughtsneed decks when I was on simic flash. We have at least 2 of this effect in Explorer, possibly more in pioneer.

Nullhide Ferox is a hefty 6/6 thats still pretty above the curve and castable with pseudo protection. It wasn't a great fit for simic flash because I basically had to tax myself to cast half the spells in my deck. I can see it being good in a green stompy deck though.

There's also Orvar, the All-Form who will always at least ramp you unless he gets yeeted out turn one by your opponent on the play but seems more like a main deck build around for a type of deck that doesn't exist and is probably bad. But I always kind of wanted to play him anyway just because the value on turn 4 flashing Nightpack Ambusher as a response to thoughtsneed to force them to make me discard Orvar and clone my Nightpack Ambusher seemed like a really value play. Or making myself discard it when Brazen Borrowing a Graveyard Trespasser

Semi related maybe Orvar's time has come outside of commander (well, probably just pioneer maybe) now that Blizzard is making a better version of his schtick on an enchantment and they get kind of crazy together.

(Faked version of leaked card, obviously not the real art probably not the real rarity)

I can see the deck working pretty well in Simic Ramp for ramping and triggering it with Snakeskin and Slip Out the Back. The release notes state that the "only one" clause of the targeting is separate from the "you control" or else you'd probably just play it with fight spells.

Double post because KF died while the set finished spoiling. While the power level for standard seems kind of middling (seems more Neon Dynasty level then Eldraine) a lot of the cards look shockingly playable in older formats. Modern tribal fags are salivating over the goblin/merfolk/elf tribe lords in particular and a lot of cards are surprisingly good (like a 2 mana instant preordain that then ramps you one land drop from hand for one green kicker or 1 mana instant removal for anything 5 total power/toughness or less or 3 mana oblivion ring for all nonland permanents 2 cmc or less)

Also I last minute no lifed into Mythic in Explorer which was kind of fun since it ended on a Bant Flash vs. Simic Flash mirror match and my opponent died to not completely blocking my crazy board filled with wolves and samurai that was slightly larger then his crazy board filled with wolves and shark tokens

Just wait until we get into the multi-plane madness that will be March of the Machine. That shit looks like it's going to be WoTS cranked up to 11 and the knob torn off.

they want that sweet nostalgia money. they're going to hit every place with at least a few cards I think.

prerelease this draft is pretty good- it's a bit shallow feeling, the mechanics are hard to stick through all three packs. lived the 5 color dream in one draft though and that made up for the failed others.
I even had a chance to draft on arena for a while and it felt about the same. I wasn't on there much, no interest in formats other than standard and legacy.

My local game stores are pretty boring/unremarkable in a good way. Frequent constructed formats, focus on the games and not really the ideologies. I don't know where anyone else stands on woke stuff and I like that - we're there to play, not talk politics. Anyone else have a nice game store like this?

Been playing Pioneer and I'm a fine so far. When Inverter combo was the format, it seemed super uninteresting to me but it's finally in a good spot. There are quite a few very strong decks and some other reasonable options. Midrange, Control, and Aggro are all represented with some combo options.

I reinstalled tor just to tell you that pioneer is a bitch format for bitches. also I traveled to Russia then China to tell you that "woke" doesn't have any meaning, just play with fags and bitches and anyone, teferi sucks no matter his color. the blue bastard

Time to play everyone's favorite game: what's getting banned out of standard?
My guess is Meathook and Invoke Despair, they kind of realized Meathook was maybe too good and have already nerfed it in Alchemy and Invoke Despair is somewhere between a 3 for 1 and a 6 damage nuke to face that draws you 3 cards every time it resolves.
My wish is Graveyard Trespasser and Lilliana, card draw is too fucking weak in this meta to deal with so many 2 for 1s in black and I hate how Graveyard shits both on single target removal and graveyard strategies on a reasonable body that also makes people play around day/night cycle bullshit. Lili is a good card that would be fine if every other deck wasn't just top decking.

Ertai was a simp for dead robot elf pussy, he was gonna get Crovax's position till Crovax found out that Ertai and Belbe were gonna betray him and Crovax picked up Ertai by the neck and threatened to snap him like the little Soy-boy twig he is.

Re : Bans..it is going to be Meathook, it completely fucks Aggro in the ass in an impressive way.

Ertai just got trapped and wanted to run off with Belbe, but they got stuck in the Volrath - Covax shit fit and because Belbe thought she could get Ertai to be a ruler it made Corvax view him as a threat and fuck him up. His character sucked in Apocalypses though.
