The Phyrexia: All Will Be One cinematic teaser is pretty.

I'm a new returning player and trying to wrap my head around the lore leading up to this as a break from the corporate drama. The official First Look got posted a couple hours ago and it's making for decently interesting background listening.

Out of the fifty Elesh Norn alternates I think I hate the Jinji Ito one the most. It just looks goofy and like she's taking a shit while working on a Lady Gaga music video or a haunted house

Sure, some of Jinji Ito's art can be interesting but I think he's horribly overrated.

I'm just hoping they don't screw up the completion packs... The oil slick treatment looks dope and while I really want the concept praetors, I don't want to have to shill out more than I would for a secret lair. Honestly, I might buy All are One if they don't try to over-monetize it to make up for Magic 30's bed-shitting release.

So the other day I found out the 30th Anniversary GP was gayer than I first knew, as not only did they require vaccine papers to get in the door, but they also had retarded shit like:

Oh, and here's everyone's least favorite China Faggot bugging people about masks as if he's the hero, in his own video, which he used Rudy's image on (multiple videos actually) despite Rudy, Open Boosters, and others not wanting anything to do with this sleazy fuck. Not surprising he's acting like the mask hall monitor:
Eh, there's cancer patients and young kids that want to play safely, something like this needs the masks. Some of those people could die from any of the shit that's going around right now, it's bad out there. This shit, mask on in public, is a good thing.

Vaccine papers though? Useless, why bother with it. Also what in fuck asking personal medical info to go play a overpriced game.

Love his stuff, even this shitting praetor

How many sets are released each year? Is it a static number or does it wax and wane? I've been away from the game for over a decade.
It changes a lot over time.
Right now its 4 full sized premier (i.e. standard) sets a year.
Previously it was 1 big, 2 complimentary, 1 core set...or 3 big 3 complimentary...or 3 big, 1 core...yeah its a fucking mess
Unsets usually were every couple of years.
Modern Masters style sets were once a year or so?
Who knows how many secret lairs per year.
Commander decks used to be once a year as well, now they're every fucking standard set PLUS they're getting their own standalone sets every year now. Commander Legends, then the D&D set, and this upcoming year is the BLACKED LotR set I believe.

I miss the block formatting. I hate that the sets feel bloated because they have to cram EVERYTHING into the set because we're just going to move on in 3 months. I liked core sets too.

It used to be something like 3 plus a specialty set even a few years ago, now it's a just a fuck ton and spoiler season never ends, to the point that new set spoilers sometimes start while the prior set is still being spoiled.

Looking online this is what came out 2022 (not counting single products like Secret Lairs and other crap)
  • Innistrad: Double Feature – January 28 (Specialty set of prior two sets from previous year, Standard sets)
  • Commander Collection: Black – January 28 (Not Sure)
  • Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty – February 18 (Standard)
  • Streets of New Capenna – April 29 (Standard)
  • Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate – June 10 (Eternal set disaster)
  • Double Masters 2022 – July 8 (Eternal set)
  • Dominaria United – September 9 (Standard)
  • Unfinity – October 7 (Un set specialty)
  • The Brothers War – November 18 (Standard set)
  • Jumpstart 2022 – December 2 (Special new player eternal set)

So that's 4 standard sets, 2-3 eternal sets, and 1 un set as well as a reprint set. There are also piles of random special products like Warhammer 40k decks.

They also have a ton more box types, so instead of just a booster box each set has a Draft box, a Set box, a Collector box, a Jump Start box, and more. There are no less than four variants of every card printed, and it's made the game feel bloated and shit.

Ah crap I forgot about Jumpstart too, jesus christ theres so much product and its only going to get worse in the short term.

Its a shame the ruined jumpstart, the original set was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed just playing it. I didn't give a fuck about the value, it was a cool idea done well (outside of the supply problems). Then they took another golden goose and turned it inside out to look for where the golden eggs came from.

Supposedly Amazon did another dump today with Crimson Vow draft boxes as low as 64$ a box. How the hell do they expect any LGS to carry their product when an LGS pays mid 80's to low 90's a box currently? That's no longer a small loss, that a more than a quarter of your money lost.

They still have Dominaria United Collectors at 154$ up, which was the set with Lost Legends. What a massive flop.

"why so serious?"
Why are they all so ugly?

It's funny how the "people" WotC has catered to are the first to turn on them, whether it's MtG as we see here or all of the woke websites telling people to ditch D&D for other systems now that it's being monetized.

Though really that last statistic is something that makes me really uninterested in getting into MtG in any capacity beyond very casual Arena play. I just don't want to deal with shit like Enter the Dungeon, Day and Night tracking, Companions, and stickers. Especially because all of those things are relevant for all of five cards usually and just make the game a bloated mess for little to no reward and increase complexity needlessly.

I get it, they're trying to explore design space, but the more shit you introduce that needs to be tracked for one card in one deck, the more your game feels like shit. It's also probably going to hit their cash cow EDH extra hard as there's more of a chance one random card forces additional tracking, and there are more eternal tracking shit like who the Monarch is or whatever as well.

Brevity is the soul of wit. Keep that in mind when you look at the mess of the last year.

Thank fuck the last set I bought anything from was Crimson Vow.

I said it in the board game thread, but I'll say it here as well, good game design is like good UI design, it's best when you don't even recognize that it's there. Too many people these days want their work recognized so they make certain things impossible to ignore, which just hurts the final product.
