I was also watching some fun looking Sam-food decks out there. Seems more of the set may be playable than first estimated...
I still think Sam Food is more of a meme than a real deck, largely because every other set someone claims that "We finally got the Asmo deck working" and it never pans out, between that fact and the fact it pushes the deck into awkward colors, which isn't exactly a massive issue in Modern but it is an avenue of attack that can be taken advantage of.

In regards to the One Ring, I mostly missed on the fact that the Protection aspect..is actually relevant.

The one ring actually makes me sort of want to play Historic and then I remember that historic is nothing but Rakdos/Grixis Crucias decks and Wizard Burn and the deck I'd most want to play (Queza/Griselbrand creativity) doesn't get to run one ring anyway. Maybe I could play Azorious control but ehh. I crave the endorphin rush of high value, even when I play control I need to cheat on taxes and play janky control shit like Jeskai Mindsplice Apparatus.

Looks like you can get an infinite loop with it, Cauldron Familiar, and a sac outlet for a win. I do find it kind of funny to think about Samwise winning games by just throwing a black cat at wizards over and over.

Well... ok but I had to prepare a little bit crow for you to eat. ;) (but since you demonstrate honor, we'll cook & season it for ya)

Oh and it's also hilarious that WotC apparently missed that being Legendary is a benefit for the ring as you can play additional copies to "reset" the burden counters on it (or make temp copies to pile up burdens without the pain).

Yeah I know the combo, it just seems really clunky compared to decks like Scam, Murktide, Cascade and 4 Color Money Pile Given that you are playing a 3 color deck...with Urza's Saga, you are kind of asking to get got by Blood Moon.

I think everyone underestimated the protection Claus on the Ring, and when it first came out I did say the draw effect would be powerful, I just figured that the faster decks in Modern would go under it. I still think that Modern can adjust to the Ring. Tear Asunder exists and is a card that exists and hits a few things across the format at 2 mana and also hits one of the other major cards across the multiverse - Urza's Saga.

All you need is cat in the graveyard, you could run it 2 colors with something like smugglers copter. Yeah I know black has the best sac outlets but you can substitute with things like alters or blasting stations.

Or go pure black and animate out Samwise.

As commander masters spoilers have begun in earnest, how’s everyone feeling about it? I think the set is shaping up to be iconic masters tiers of interest, with most of the cards I’ve seen being only moderately in need of reprints… even if it looks like it’ll be a fun time to draft.

I've got boxes of both previous commander legends sets I'm dying to draft and I would LOVE to buy a box of this for drafting...

If a box wasn't worth almost half of my remaining car payments! I understand WotC has to make money but this is near insane.

Same thing I think of most Reprint sets.

Overpriced.

So here's the problem with this set. I don't know who it's for.

EDH players don't usually like sealed, and they buy singles. So it's not really for the vast majority of EDH players.

It's too expensive to shotgun over and over to get good at it in draft. So it's not for limited players.

It's not for standard because it's reprints, and aside from having some modern playable cards it really isn't going to make a splash there aside from drawing the price down.

Stores can't crack it for singles because it's not the 2000-2010s and the expected value of the packs are going to be very low and opening them will drive the prices of the reprinted cards down due to the supply/demand curve.

It must suck to be a distributor or store owner. If this is the best WotC can do.

That's been the case for a while now considering WotC dumps product on Amazon for lower than what distribution sells it to stores for. I've talked to a few people who own stores and all of them are cutting Magic down to the point of only having enough to run events and a few boxes to sell. I can't imagine a store surviving off Magic alone anymore.

I also think that Reprint sets...are less valuable now for people who aren't "COMPETATIVE PRO PLAYERZZZZZZZ!" because after Magic 30 Quite frankly..Who gives a rats ass about people proxying expensive cards.

Yup, all of the buy lists have been sinking slowly, and I'm guessing a lot of stores have a lot of inventory they'll be lucky to sell at break even prices. For a long time most stores made money on singles buying Standard at 40-60% and legacy/vintage at 70-85% as those were more stable. Now all of the shit is dirt cheap, nothing retains value, and the million variants just adds to the time it takes to sell and sort everything, while at the same time increasing the frequency of people ordering the wrong shit.

A lot of stores survived off of singles churn, but that's dead as well.

my big EDH deck lost 2000 Dollars of Value since M30 (I have a playset of Dual Lands I got when they were 100ish and not 500+)

The craziest thing I've seen is stores with those sorting machines that take up an entire table, and they're sorting bulk worth $1-2 each. At some point you have to question if maybe it's time to change the business model when you need complex machinery to sell dollar cards.

Is that a fucking troon on the art?? Like they pasted a man's head on a woman's body?

Time for an official Tranny Card, it can be a 0/1 creature with "At the beginning of each upkeep flip a coin, if you lose this creature sacrifices itself"
