I gathered them up in the years after Graduation because before my life fell apart I was going to attempt to be a dedicated tournament grinder because I loved the game and well, if I play a game I follow the lore.

I have them still in a box and really haven't read them in forever but..The actual Weatherlight Anthology was terribly uneven, but I would attribute that to being an anthology so the plot had some flow issues.

When you get to the Mercadian Masques Block the books become a bit more coherent and passable (outside of Prophecy which is just filler junk) but they never really rise above "Mediocre and passable"

The Invasion Block is a fine Climax to a building story.
Odyssey..is a cool bottle episode
Onslaught is fucking awful except the moment that Kamahl turned the Mirari's power in on itself by showing what happens when you take the Colors to extremes.
Mirrodin..was 2/3 of a good plot that exploded in the last book and then got turned into absolute insane nonesense in Scars.
I guess i was the only one who liked the Onslaught block story lmao

So, Kiwis who were alive at the time, what was the fan response? What didn't people like?
I've read all the books and enjoyed them all except Masques, and from what I remember people didn't really care one way or the other about if the cards had story elements on them or not. I know people liked that Magic had a sense of its own story, where even if you didn't follow the story you knew it was something unique to the world, and look at the sets that do great, things like Dominaria, Ravnica, all have more sets they return to than Egypt but Magic. Inspiration is fine to draw from the real world, but it's lame when you have more of the real world aspects than the Magic ones in the game.

I do know some people were pissy about the Magic story, but not in a substantial way, just in a "oh you read Magic lore? Why? Pick up a real book like Harry Potter."

Whelp. Had a youtubers’ video on a spicy Legacy build on, while I was doing some things around the house. At one point, I had to pause and rewind the video. Apparently, this dude did a fundraiser for Trans Lifeline this year. Fuck.

Yeah BoshnRoll did that for like a weeks worth of content. The deck he played in the video you mentioned was submitted by a tranny, and I stopped watching as soon as he said as much. I usually enjoy his content, but not when I’m reminded that magics playerbase is full of men pretending to be women.
Part two of that guy talking about all the way Arena is known to or suspected to be cheating
This retard is confused how WOTC got to the “40% of our players are women” when the last standard pro tour was almost won by a “”””woman”””” piloting a deck that takes zero mental energy to play, and still managed to get beaten. Obviously it’s because they’re willing to add men in dresses to the statistic.

Even if you want to assume they count every obvious transwomen and the one or two probably female players* you see from time to time 5 times each it's hard to come up with 40% women, the number is bafflingly optimistic.

*Funny aside, after fury got banned in modern a probably actually female player made the news by jamming Rakdos Scam anyway and winning a Grand Open Qualifier, it's almost as though all the pitch elementals are a problem.

So I'll admit upfront I was wrong and/or misremembered. I went to go find the tweet and it wasn't Maro who made the quote. It was Doug Beyer, who was the principal game designer on the magic worldbuilding team during WAR. I also found out he still works at wizards as senior staff. Apologies.View attachment 5576633
So let me get this straight not gay, even the Phyrexians, who had Gix, who in the book Planeswalker was described as the personification of rape, are pro gay?

Monica, if you can't write a story about homophobes because your audience is so fragile, you have a shit IP. I'm not even saying you have to glorify it, but seriously, how are you such a pathetic bitch that you can't even fathom that maybe the rape body horror demons that enslave worlds might not like the gays or something?

That’s absolutely fucked. What is it with legacy players and being tranny lovers? Alisha, who smiles at death isn’t even good in the format.
The legacy/vintage demographic is completely contained within the Leftist circle on the Venn Diagram. College educated early millennials/late gen Xs with no real responsibilities and significant disposable income to consume product with. An entire population of incredibly friendzonable male feminists.

Well, at least the ones who haven't already transitioned anyway

Well there is that darky little girl planeswalker that is actually god or whatever.
Aminatou? She's not that bad. She's never been in the main story, plus she's a precog in a setting with other precogs.

That being said, absolutely I want to see her home plane, and how SJWs fuck up West African folklore. But Aminatou herself is fine.
