In the sense of a rules framework and gamefeel as a whole, magic is a wonderful game. Most everyone in the thread will bitch about current design pretty heavily, and we’re all really sick of the IP crossover, but if your friend is looking for another regular player for their group we can gladly talk your ear off about it.
I wonder if it'd be possible to do a fanmade alternate branch of the story that doesn't suck, with cards, if you don't sell anything.

More yes than no, I'd say. Game is still good. But there are those damn marketable IPs, and shit gets more expensive every time.
Install MTG arena to learn how to play. Don't pay any money into it. If you like it - you'd better buy normal cards.
Starting now the Universes Beyond slop may not bother you since you wouldn't really be attached to the way the game was. As the others have said it's still mechanically fun.

Thanks for the suggestion; I'm more of a lore guy than a gameplay guy, but I'll try and figure out how to make a deck soon enough. I have tried to dip into the game previously - they did a crossover with another game of mine over a decade ago, and DND has a bunch of stuff from MTG in there obviously - but I never quite took a deeper dive beforehand.

Speaking of which... anyone got suggestions on where I should begin? MTG Arena sounds like a good avenue for the gameplay, but what about the lore, characters, etc.? There are a few settings that I'm interested in; should I just pick one and get started, or what?

Find Brothers War book series and go from there.

There are also apps that allow you to play Magic online without having to spend money, they're just not as feature rich as Arena. They're useful for deckbuilding and experimentation without investment. Try Cockatrice.

Is MTG worth getting into these days? A friend of mine is pretty into it, and I was thinking about giving it a look myself.
I generally stick to commander formats like EDH, 2HG and Archenemy. The precons for it have been getting alright. Valgavoth, Hearthull, Pantzala, Betor, and Teval were all solid and should still be in stores. I'd say Tarkir Dragonstorm is the best set of the past couple years.

I won't buy UB shit like LOTR, Spiderman, Avatar, Fallout, or Final Fantasy because I just hate crossovers in principle. They all just feel like advertisements for different IPs and they're all powercrept and like 50% more expensive than in-universe stuff. It's what's killed Monster Hunter for me as well.

Aetherdrift all sucks ass. The not-valgavoth duskmourn decks all need expensive upgrades to work.

Magic can get expensive fast, especially once you get away from the "oops all colorless and taplands" they keep reprinting. Just proxy shit over like 10 bucks. You can also use scryfall advanced searching to find cheaper or better-fit alternatives to overpriced staples. For example: I use a Glacier Godmaw instead of Craterhoof Behemoth since getting +2 to +4 on average, haste, and vigilance does a lot more for me than a 1 time use overrun that needs you super wide to win.

Looks like you can find a good selection of the books Here. The official wizards site has the stories from about 2011-2012 to present, but they get more and more retarded the closer you get to present if it isn’t exclusively written about Jace and Vraska (even then it’s starting to look dicey).

You can also find good lore summaries on the youtube, but the main people in the community who care about cataloging the lore can be petty faggots about it. MTG Wiki tends to be largely free of that, but it’s a free wiki so you’ll have to sift the info provided.

Gay Bolas? Jace, the Snake Fucker? Or the upcoming return to lgbt friendly Hogwart?

So... I'm guessing the lore's difficult to line out and filled with a bunch of random bullshit?

Sounds like a challenge.

Old lores are cool.

Sounds like I got a place to start, at least. Thanks!

I'll try to track down some cards; local stores are a bit random on what they carry from time to time, so it can be a bit difficult to plan sometimes.

The game itself is great, and even the shitty modern sets have some fun designs to it in places.

Go to Kindle and buy "The Brothers War" novel by Jeff Grub, that is a good starting point.

You could try starting with the Thran book too, when I young I thought it was great but after revisiting it it doesn't hold up at all, but it is the origin of the original big bad of the lore Yawgmoth and the Phyrexians.

The old Lore was awesome and surprisingly deep.
2 sorcerer brothers have a sibling rivalry that grows into a war which culminates in essentially nuclear winter. One brother discovers a portal to hell and talks them into being on his side in the war. There's a time skip and one brother starts up a not-gay hogwarts...its all cool shit

But somewhere along the way wizards decided to try to make an mtg version of the avengers where their superhero team jumps around from world to world

>says how awesome the old lore is
>gets the most basic fact about Urza and Mishra wrong.

Jesus fucking christ man.

There used to be a mega link with loads of old novels and comics floating around, if I can find it I'll post it. Multiverse in Review was a pretty good blog that went through a lot of the old lore as well. And there's always the wiki. Also, you know... the art and flavor on the cards.

The D&D MtG books aren't very good and frankly dubiously canon because the state of any setting basically sits in stasis until it gets a revisit, and when it does get a revisit anything established is liable to fly out the window because WotC doesn't care about consistency. Frankly as long as you feel the general vibe of a setting and the broad strokes details, you probably understand it better than WotC's own employees.
