Magic: the Gathering

I've used to play during my high school years, now I'm into Cardfight Vanguard when I get the time, but I'm not a dedicated player of Trading Cards anymore.

WHEN I WAS A YOUNG BOY, I remember when Magic first came out. It looked cool and I asked my mom to get me a deck and she's like "No, you can't play it" because she thought I'd join a cult or start worshiping Satan if I played it. If I got those cards when they first came out, I'd be one rich dude. The guy who DMs my D&D games was able to send his daughter to college just on some of the old Magic cards he had.

Now I want to see what the fuss is about and to add variety to my gaming. Sure, I play board games regularly, and I RPG, but I should do something else. I'm not a big fan of TCGs because they can be huge cash sinks (I say this as I used to play Pokemon back in the day) but I suppose I could buy a booster every now and then and just play for fun and not be super obsessive about it.

A friend of mine says I might as well try crack because I'll probably get that addicted.

I've tried the PC version of Magic, it seems like an interesting guy, I might get one of those deck builder toolkits and a fat pack, maybe an intro deck, so I can make my own deck and have a decent collection. Plus the fat pack comes with deck boxes, which would be useful.

I was huge into Magic from The Dark through around when they started printing the rarity in the cards, then my ex got me back in for a bit a few years ago but now that I'm paying rent and stuff it's not that viable a thing.

I still play the ancient PC game from the 90s every now and then. The AI wigs out when it has to do some fuzzy work like handling Mishra's Factory, but it's enough to scratch my occasional itch.

You might want to look into a sealed draft tournament at your local shop. Good way to play right away while building up your collection. Also it's casual so people are more willing to help you learn while you play.

Pulled a foil flooded strand out of a booster box last week. That sumbitch is already worth $75. I'll be holding onto it for a couple years

Reviving this dead thread because magic is the shit

Anyone want to play pauper or something on untap.in?

First time I ever heard of untap.in, I tend to just stick with Commander now days. Used to go to quite a bit of tournaments back in the day until the prizes started to drop in quality.

A friend gave me his deck one year because he turned "to God" and Magic wasn't Christian.
Another kid found out there was a rumored Sliver queen(?) in the deck and was apparently really pissed with the guy who gave the deck away; he then kept asking to trade for it and I had no idea what he was trying to trade for. As far as I know there wasn't a sliver queen in the deck.

-I had no fucking clue how to play but I liked some of the concepts and the art. Jangling Automaton was pitiful as a creature but I loved it enough to revive it once or twice when trying to learn how to play. In the end the game proved to be too autistic for my brand of 'tism because I never really tried to play it again.
Never really thought about it again, either, until I saw this thread.

I gave up the game for a lot of reasons, one of which is the fact that the cards are focused on telling the story of their lame cast of central characters.

Back in the day their characters were great, then they focused on all the new planeswalkers they made for their planeswalker cards and the quality of their characters just dropped. It's hard to care about them when it's all about people like Jace Cena.

Thanks for the tip on untap.in @Harambe looks like its actually a decent client. I'll give it a proper run through tomorrow, since I need more reps with Eldrazi Tron anyway.

This is the reason why I honestly think I stopped caring about the story before Battle for Zendikar, the Gatewatch is the worst thing to happen to the lore. Though maybe Wizards will learn there leason since Karn and Teferi are coming back next block. I hope they have at least.

This is Wizards of the Coasts, you're being too optimistic that they'll learn from their mistakes.

Chandra bugs me a lot for some reason. It feels like every new red card is called "Chandra's (insert hot thing or emotion)," and features an obnoxious quote at the bottom that basically amounts to her sticking her forefingers in her dimples and saying, "Gosh, ain't I a stinker?"

She sucked for so long, I have no clue why they kept making her. Like her phoenix was better than her.

The 1997 game is far better than any of the recent games and it's 20 years old.

You can find it on abandonware sites if you are interested, but it's a good game to play.

At least they unbanned Bloodbraid too. I'm not too worried about JtMS myself but it is super unfun to play against.
I'm happy about the Jace unban because I play U/B Turns, where Jace is going to be at his absolute best. Overall, I don't think he is going to be as good as he is in legacy in most control shells as he won't be protected by FoW. However, Turns is more of a combo/control hybrid than outright control. BBE is the gift that Jund needed to be good again with the advent of push.
