kind of a short n' sweet, not sure if it's been proposed, but could the happenings thread button on the homepage have buttons for the last 5 pages, or just go to the last page? I'm sure you'd save quite a bit on bandwidth from people just clicking through to go to the last page. Perhaps there could also be a shortlink like https://kiwifarms.st/happenings that just goes to the last page

If you're signed into your account then entering a thread takes you as far as you read up to previously (via the /unread suffix, I think). So this would only really be useful for browsing guest users. I had thought of the same thing in the months I lurked without an account, but it became a non-issue as soon as I was logged into my account on all the devices I use to browse the site.

I tend to just pop this site up in incognito so I don't get it on my visible browser history, I figure a large portion of the users here are just lurkers though so could be a worthy change

How about implement OP's request for non logged-in users. Just change /unread to /latest.

And for SneedForo, have /lastpage that takes you to the top of the last page, and more exotic URL options. Except that's the only one I can think of right now.

I think the fact it remembers where you are is great. Just press the double arrow to get to the end of the thread.

That is not always true. Threads in the new posts boxes on the home page link specifically to the opening page, not appending the /unread as they should. That forces logged-in users to feel slighted and unwelcome, like they're not even better than all the unaccounted nothings.
