From what little I recall of this series through decades of fog, the romance aspect was pretty shit, even as a kid I wasn't really focused on it but still got a -That's so uninspired- vibe from it. So Malfoid makes more sense than a random later addition.

This is along the lines of what I had in mind for Dracina, an arrogant princess type. She would run the school like Regina George and make fun of Harry whenever she could. The last image didn't work out but the idea was she was embarrassed in class and Harry is trying not to laugh at her for looking stupid. This is why she has to bully him. Their initial meeting I think is what really sets up the dynamic. Lady Malfoy is raised a privileged wizarding world princess. She meets THE Harry Potter who is also the child of a well regarded wizarding family who are very rich. This is established the first chapter when Harry see's his inheritance at Gringotts. Which is ginormous. All Things that she could respect. But then she finds Harry slumming it with a Muggle Born and the fucking WEASLEYS.
So, being the magnanimous princess she is, she offers harry a boon and suggests introducing him to "better" friends. Clearly he is just misguided and its up to her to fix him. But shock and horror, he tells her NO. He sticks with his chosen friends and rejects her offered friendship. He is the first person in her entire life who has told her "no."
It just works better. I can't deny. The entire scene works better and sets up the rivalry and enmity better then what was written.
Also thinking about this is fun. I am reliving my childhood. I read these books as they came out, and the harry potter fandom on unsupervised 1990's internet was fun. It warms my heart to see the children discover this.
