I feel most drawn to something in between. Somewhere along the lines of 'our families have always been close so we grew up together and Dracina has always been the brains of the operation so we do whatever she says but we see her as a bratty sister and want whatever will genuinely make her happy', maintaining the dumb muscle aspect while side-stepping shitty unrequited love tension and providing room for unexpected depth.
Isn't that what they did in the live action 101 Dalmatians or Cruella movie? Her henchmen were always stupid muscle but one of the later versions showed them as orphans growing up together and why they had loyalty to her. Either way I like that idea instead of another genderbent version.

Yes, gooners exist and they are scum. No, you don't have to be one. You can enjoy chaste love stories that aren't inherently coombrained. You can enjoy cute art that isn't inherently coombrained. Not everything that involves children falling in love needs to be disgusting and coombrained. I was a child. I fell in love. I will not have those memories and feelings tainted by either perversion, or cynicism.

Anyways, cute trend! Reminds me of pre-2012/pre-tumblr fandoms, I love that there's whole-ass story arcs showing up for the rest of the cast. It's great to see people doing stuff for pure fun again, it's been so rare recently. I have no opinion on whether or not it's a "better" story, I find both versions to be fun dynamics. I hope this helps get kids to read the books, they might not be the epitome of writing and worldbuilding but they're so fucking much better than the shit they're filling their brains with. Rather get them hooked on shoving their face in books than gluing their eyes to a screen!
