The Israeli Embassy in D.C., in 2016.

A man is in critical condition after setting himself on fire midday Sunday outside the Israeli Embassy in D.C., authorities said.

No one else was injured in the incident, which took place just before 1 p.m. in the 3500 block of International Drive NW. A video shared online, which multiple officials said appeared to be posted by the man, shows him shouting “Free Palestine” as he burned.

The man said he was an active-duty member of the U.S. Air Force. A spokeswoman for the Air Force, Ann Stefanek, said they had not yet identified the man or verified whether he is in the service.

Since the Israel-Gaza war began just over four months ago, at least 29,629 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Israel estimates that about 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack and says 240 soldiers have been killed since the start of its military operation in Gaza.

Hamas and allied fighters took more than 253 people hostage during the attack. More than 100 were freed in exchange for more than 200 Palestinian detainees during a November pause in fighting. Israeli authorities believe that more than 100 hostages remain in Gaza.

On Sunday, uniformed Secret Service officers responded to a report of a person experiencing a possible medical or mental health emergency, said Joe Routh, a U.S. Secret Service spokesman.

Responding officers put out the fire before D.C. firefighters arrived, around 1 p.m., fire department spokesman Vito Maggiolo said. The D.C. Fire and Emergency Services department then took the man to a hospital in life-threatening condition. He remained hospitalized Sunday afternoon.

In the video, which is just over three minutes long, one person can be heard saying, “Hi, sir, can I help you?” as the man approaches the gate to the embassy.

About 12 seconds later, as a person again asks, “Can I help you, sir,” the man lights the fire.

The man burned for about a minute and collapsed on the ground, the video showed, before law enforcement began to extinguish the fire.

this shit particularly makes me laugh my ass off, because I've seen stuff like this in OG game x-com mods. Using incendiary rounds to try and make a unit pass out for capture, putting them out with a fire extinguisher so they dont DIE, and holding a gun on them incase they get up. maybe this power levels me as a nerd whos played that stuff, but I'm confident anyone who has will find that funny.

Perhaps a silly reference, but it still makes me laugh my ass off thinking about it.

Yeah, I think its even more than just suicide, because you have to be aware its GOT to suck. And the fact the guy said "free palistine" that many times while burning and in extreme pain (seemingly till his vocal cords melted?) is kinda hard not to respect for JUST having a lot of willpower, at very least.
Still probably not a smart decision, but its silly to say this guy wasn't kinda hardcore to do that.
To be fair to the cop seeing someone burned to a char has to be fucking horrifying. Imagining myself in that situation I think I’d do the same thing. Jesus Christ I know I would do a same thing, time to give me the TMI rating here’s a blogpost.

I was doing the night shift for my first job, let’s say it was a 7/11 (it wasn’t). I hear a woman’s scream “Call 911.” I turn my head and she’s covered in Blood, she got hit by a car while crossing the street. I quickly call 911 they’re on their way and I didn’t fuck that up. But then I went to her and tried to think WTF should I do??? THE MEDKIT THAT’ll have stuff to help. So I get the medkit and pull out the bandage, I then rush to her and realize the bandage is a 1 inch by 1 inch square and she has a gash running across her forehead! wtf is that bandage gonna do?

So I try to find other stuff to do something, anything. At that point a good man comes in and saves the day. Uses his own shirt to makeshift a bandage to at least cover the bleeding. He talks to her and stays with her the entire time. My manager showed me the tape and I basically ran in circles like a complete idiot. If it wasn’t for the Good Samaritan she may have died for all I know. The point is I’m a fucking moron and during emergencies I’m the last person you want. If I saw Burning Man I’d probably just run away like a little faggot.

On this week's episode of MTV's Jackass.

Just going to say it:

The airman was a pathetic attention seeking loser. I won't even say that he is a cuck as that requires being in a subservient relationship.

They are simply a pathetic loser.

His life was so devoid of meaning that he was attracted to the cause de jour.

In a sad and desperate attempt to give his existence meaning, he sacrificed himself.

Yet, he will be forgotten in a week.

This is the funniest image in ages.

I guess that guard doesn't know bullets don't work on Freddy Krueger.

Still, nice Rage Against the Machine album cover cosplay by the alleged Air Force guy.
Its very obviously funny but I do feel for the dude, his mind was gone in pure terror as he watched this. It's not like he shot him or anything but this dude probably is in a dark place right now. Unironically imagine the smell will stay with him for the rest of his life.

Given his Twitch account and other socials, it's interesting that he chose to transition to a true and honest BBQ rather than a true and honest woman.

On a more serious note, the foolishness of his self-immolation is more than counter-acted by the size of the brass balls needed to actively choose to burn yourself to death and not pussy out during the blinding pain and roll on the ground screaming for someone to put you out. We should be thankful that most antifa are physical cowards, because if they had a fraction of the guts to do something like this, they'd be far more fearsome opponents. Some may give me trash reacts for this, but I can recognize outstanding physical bravery in people I believe hold stupid and repugnant political beliefs.

I think people also underestimate how much of a media coup this is for the pro-Palestinian wing of the left. The guy did everything right in regards to optics for his cause, when even someone like myself who doesn't give a shit about Palestinians and loathes anarchism and anarchists can find his self-immolation admirable on a certain level. The sneering derision on social media from the Zionist Flying Keyboard Brigade amplifies the stark contrast, literally they do not see how powerful a statement it is, and mocking it pours more fuel on the fire consuming the American body politic. The correct response would be to quickly attempt to memory hole the pictures and video in the larger news cycle and paint the guy as a mentally ill nutcase who tragically died due to his delusions.

On a side note, an antifa watcher like me is noticing certain things, namely who is glowie funded by Bellingcat and other NPO glow-ops, and who is actually dedicated to the cause is really becoming stark and apparent on social media. There's going to be some interesting factionalism and possible internecine violence among the far-left in America pretty soon.
I 100% agree, I think this dude was a clown but he had balls of steel to do what he did. I take it someone has already posted the Mossad "our enemies kill themselves" meme that was pretty quickly taken down?

if you want to give up your life to spite the jews, at least have the balls to actually kill some of them. bonus points if you target government officials.
but committing suicide for attention is pure cringe behavior

I think it remains to be seen if his method was more damaging or not, this may in fact do more damage to Israel by way of public sentiment in the eyes of the public than if he did try and harm people on his way out.

Everyone who has set themself on fire was trying to copy this guy. But the reason his was so memorable was because I don't think anyone else ever tried that before. It was the shock value that earned him immortality.

These theatrical protestors need to be more creative. Like shooting themselves out of a cannon and exploding against the embassy in a big, red blast. Now THAT would be memorable.

Self-immolation was done before this famous incident and has been done after but Thích Quảng Đức's act isn't easily matched by imitators for the following reasons:
1. It was during the South Vietnamese Buddhist Crisis and not that many people had died in that particular period to the point where his sacrifice would just be easily buried by constant news of death and destruction, his act stood out.
2. He was a Buddhist monk in a movement mostly lead by other Buddhist monks so he wasn't just a random nobody.
3. Đức sat in a meditative pose, and was said to never move and never spoke while burning which illustrates a powerful resolve and will. Many who wish to follow in his footsteps usually just end up lighting themselves on fire and running around like a person burning usually does, either getting fatally injured or dying in the process.
4. He was surrounded by many witnesses, many of which were people with similar ideas and faith to his own which translated to a great deal of wailing and crying taking place while he burned away. The whole ordeal was an emotional spectacle for all who saw it. Many observers to this event also meant it was easy to document and photograph.

By comparison there is a good chance the guy in this article will be talked about for a couple days to a week and then promptly forgotten like the time someone did this in December of last year.
