The thing about random stops like this is they’re rarely “random”. They tend to target black drivers and poorer looking people the hardest. I’ve got experience getting pulled over for a similar reason.

“High beams on at night on a two lane highway” only about a quarter of mile away from the exit I was supposed to take - I’d only turned them on to make sure I didn’t miss my exit sign, which I’d done on that road before. My car was a real beater at the time, and the cop declined pulling over semis doing the same thing I was doing. He didn’t find any reason to ticket me, questioned me about a past traffic ticket and was pretty grumpy about it.

I understand what you're saying here, but the broader problem is that we have certain things which are technically illegal that really shouldn't be(personal use quantities of weed, buying or selling sex among consenting adults, various gun control laws that are really just about disarming the public, probably some other shit I've either forgotten or don't know about)as a cop, sheriff or highway patrolman, you are on the front lines of enforcing these laws and thus you are always going to get a certain amount of shit for that I'm afraid.

Checking the OP's post, this guy's main crime was possessing a pistol without a permit,(I haven't read the whole thread, if he has done something else more fucked up then I preemptively apologize) and a lot of people think(myself included)that you shouldn't need a permit simply to own a handgun and have it in your car. This guy then proceeded to try and run away which only aggravated things further of course, and apparently this specific cop was a fucking incompetent dipshit who can't tell the difference between a taser and a loaded pistol so here we are. None of this justifies rioting and people burning down their own neighborhoods though, and the best argument for why we need police is to keep people from doing that.
