Honestly she should have known something was off when there wasn’t a safety to flip. IIRC the model of taser she had was one of those with a manual safety.
She probably drew and fired without thinking. Then again, don't most cops not carry their taser on their strong side, as they would their pistol? That seems like her first mistake.

There’s no question she was negligent here in the extreme. Guy was a fucking moron sure, but didn’t deserve to get capped by accident because the cop was retarded.

When I watched the video, I thought she said to the male cop, "Taze him! Taze him! Taze him!" and then she shot him. From what I can make out, she doesn't admit to making a mistake in the bodycam footage, only sounds shocked.

I think they're going with the "oopsie" story because it's less murder-y sounding. If I was a cop I'd rather have the world think I was an idiot that couldn't tell my gun from a tazer than a cold blooded murderer that should be dealt some vigilante justice. Also, let me put on this tinfoil hat right quick..... As the former president of the police union she probably has an intimate understanding of the negative job repercussions of either story and went with the one that is going to get her in less trouble personally.

Word. In Middle Earth it's always the orcs who are smashing up and burning the towns and cities, you don't see the other races ever doing that shit.

Men do a lot of violence, too. And the Feanorians were famous assholes, though their greatest act of smashing and burning took place in Aman, not Middle-earth.

Excuse my ignorance - as I don't carry a taser gun like cops do; but is it not true that all Cops Guns are required to have the safety switch on? And do not Tasers, NOT have a safety switch?

It has been mentioned that most police carry Glocks. The general thinking is that self-defense guns should not have an external safety because, in the heat of the moment, the user will not have the awareness or fine motor control to manipulate the safety. Even with platforms that do have an external safety like the 1911, it is usual to deactivate it as the weapon is drawn from the holster. With enough training, this happens automatically and without thinking.

Women make absolutely shit cops. They're physically weaker than men, and even if they exercise and strength train they're still at an disadvantage.

In an encounter the only recourse is her firearm. That's it's, that's the only thing she has that can stop someone. A male cop can physically restrain, can use his presence to intimidate, and has more tools available than a woman purely based on his physical abilities.

I agree that physical ability is important to be a cop....but then how do you explain all the male lard ass cops I've seen walking around when I visited America? They're certainly not chasing anybody down, and they'd have difficulty restraining someone who's resisting as their reach barely extends beyond their massive gunt.

If she were reaching for a taser you'd pull it and shoot, but if it was a gun, you'd have to pull it and THEN turn the safety OFF to use the gun?

So, if this is true, the claim it was accidental is either a lie, or the cop was walking around with her gun with the safety OFF. If so, that is more than a mistake.

That is negligent homicide in the least.

I'd welcome anyone to comment back to set me straight on this. As I say, I've used many weapons but not the taser type used by cops so I do not know if they have safety switches just like regular guns.
Cops gun was a glock, glocks don't have a safety. Not sure about the tazer. Not sure where you're getting the info, there's 0 requirements for carrying with a safety on anywhere as far as I know.

Uhh, as expected. Guy decides to play fight a cop/let's see what running does when he had an outstanding warrant (ALLEGEDLY regarding an illegal firearm) and the dummy cop mistakes her pistol for a taser...... Whoops.

Side note, hope all those asshole democrat politicans understand that harsh gun laws will hit black community's EXTREMELY hard.

Still a shitty reason to shoot someone even if he was walking away from an arrest. Just do what the PA cops do and call him up when he's back home and tell him you know he's in there and if he doesnt walk out into your custody you'll bust into his house and drag him out kicking and screaming and seize any children inside and send them to CPS for good measure.
Then you get a hostage situation/home shootout and riots then ensue.

Jesus fuck, the Minnesota Governor, Tim Walz, is a vile piece of shit. In this article, it says 'Walz tweeted he was praying for Wright’s family “as our state mourns another life of a Black man taken by law enforcement.”' That's not throwing his own law enforcement system under the bus, that's him dropping a nuke on it and pissing on the radioactive ashes. It's downright sociopathic and irresponsible; as a leader he should be calling for calm, co-operation, forgiveness and unity. Instead he's pouring petrol on an already raging bushfire. It's insane.
That governor was outed as a giant pussy last year, along with the even bigger pussy mayor of minneapolis.

Rap only glorifies one type of behavior.

That aside he's pretty fucking pale for a black dude.
He's 1/2 white. Usually people like him are ruthlessly mocked and belittled in the back community as "light skin" or even worse "half breed".

With few exceptions most police departments in the US carry the Glock which has no external safety.

Some Asian police departments have weird versions of the Glock that have cross bar safetys like a pellet gun but this is totally unheard of in the US.

The NYPD insisted on a really heavy trigger for their guns @ 12lbs vs the standard 5.5 lb Glock trigger pull. The result is the NYPD's notorious accuracy problems.

There's something to be said for negligent discharges with these striker fired guns. When the LA Sheriff's department switched from the double action Beretta to the Smith & Wesson M&P they saw a 4x increase in negligent discharges.

Ironically both the M18 and X26 Tasers do have safety's, it's mounted at the top like a Beretta or Walther PPK but I'm unsure if any department actually uses them.

The real problem is training. Most of them never learned to not keep the finger on the trigger. I know a lot of the major city police departments only require 50 to 100 rounds fired a year for training/qualification, which is absolutely nothing. It's also worse the more urban the area is, because the cops that are from the area are far less likely to have any experience with guns outside of what they learned in training, unlike more rural areas, where the cops usually shoot in their spare time for fun or hunting.

...50 to 100 rounds is ONE DAY AT THE RANGE.

Holy fucking shit what the fuck. That's absurd.

Haven't you heard? Guns are killing machines that have no place in society. I learned that from Harry Potter where they implemented Wand Control and everyone loved it. Also the female characters there were better at quidditch because they were smaller and the male characters kept ooking and eeking as their gross male bodies weighed down their brooms.

Yep, it's a sick joke. When PDs try to get their cops more training (especially firearm training), the funding is denied z a bunch of dumbfuck "activists" whine about it, and the ACLU gets involved because LOADS of cops (women/lazy assholes/fatties) can't hit the new standards and whine about discrimination.

Same shit when they try and raise standards.

Who would want to be a cop and work 10pm to 6am and get paid $40-50k a year starting out? Yeah, you can eventually make bank, but you have to get through YEARS of absolutely shit work.

This is about as wrong a statement as you can make about this topic.

What the hell is even going on in this thread? Why are you trying to convince me that small, petite and passive woman cops are the solution to big, dangerous (and possibly armed) law-breakers? Why is @Hatpriest trying to convince me that normal productive members of society can totally "just get swept up in a riot bro", as if the average person in a riot situation wouldn't be hard in flight-mode and trying to get the fuck out of dodge as fast as possible?

Is the sky down now instead of up? Did I take too many honkpills?
We are under judgement and large portions of the population’s brains simply don’t function. (Romans “depraved mind”)

The Minnesota police officer who killed a Black man Sunday during a traffic stop and the city's police chief have stepped down, officials announced Tuesday. Brooklyn Center Officer Kim Potter's resignation, coming two days after she shot and killed 20-year-old Daunte Wright, was effective immediately, the union representing her said in a statement.

Without explicitly referencing the shooting, Potter wrote in her resignation letter: "I believe it is in the best interest of the community, the department, and my fellow officers if I resign immediately."
