The sighting in Florida this week of a manatee with “Trump” in block letters on its back has prompted an investigation and a plea for help from a nonprofit conservation group.

The Center for Biological Diversity said it was offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to a conviction “for the cruel and illegal mutilation” of a threatened manatee in the Homosassa River in Citrus County, on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission began investigating after the manatee was discovered on Sunday, the center said. The discovery was reported by the Citrus County Chronicle.

The pic I saw elsewhere on the netz looked like yeah, somebody literally carved TRUMP into the poor thing's back. I don't know jack squat about manatees, but I'm thinking that scraping the algae off a manatee's back would be like scraping the upper few layers of skin off you or me-it would hurt like fuck for quite a while and might even cause permanent scarring. Since it's Florida, I'm going with door #1 and the idea that some redneck wanted to advertise his favorite demagoguepresidential candidate in a seemingly unique way. From the pictures, it's hard to tell whether it was carved into the algal layer or into the actual skin, but I'm leaning toward the former. At least I truly hope that was the case, because the thought of some sick fuck mutilating one of the gentlest animals on earth is appalling.
