Bungie is at it again, bringing a pre-Halo lore game to a post-Halo world.
Marathon2025 2026 is an extraction shooter, based on the lore from the classic Marathon Trilogy from 1994. You take a Runner Shell, a body that isn't your own, and go out into the world of Tau Ceti and kill, loot, and extract like any other extraction shooter, this time with Bungie's gunplay involved and a questionable artstyle.
There was an attached ARG leading up to the release of the teaser trailer.
The trailer was then released to some uh, mixed reactions from fans back in 2023. Destiny fans, especially, were a bit pissed that their game was taking a back seat to a new PVP game.
The Main complaints from what I could remember at the time were that the game looked cheap, washed out, the artstyle looked like shit, and so on. After the reveal, Bungie went silent for a year as they worked on their "vision" for the game. On October 28th 2024. Bungie released a developer update talking about what was going on with the game, explaining how the game was coming along, and talking about how there was going to be a closed beta around 2025.
Keep in mind, Marathon was supposed to be releasing in September of 2025. They would go silent for five months before releasing their reveal showcase which they used to show off Marathon's updated graphics, talk about their vision of the game even more, Something interesting, is that Bungie is a pretty "Woke" Studio, with all of their previous Vidocs of the modern era having He/Him and other gay tags under people's names. But because Trump was now the supreme overlord of the United States again, they seemed to have stopped using them.
Here are the trailers revealed during the livestream:
During this vidoc, they announced the start of Closed Alpha testing, allowing applications via its Discord server.

Which people starved for content from Daddy Bungie eagerly signed up for. The Alphas were under NDA from what I remember, so people weren't really recording or sharing them much, but now that the game is nearing release, people are releasing gameplay footage from the alphas onto youtube.
Here's a video comparing the 2025 Alpha to the current build of the game.
The first alpha ended back in May, and while Bungie was dealing with fan complaints about how the game felt, they also had to deal with an artist over on X claiming that they had once again plagiarized someone. For those not in the know, Bungie has a bad habit of art theft. They got sued a year or two ago because the entire story of Destiny 2's vanilla campaign was apparently stolen from someone, though this time it wasn't as egregious as that. So apparently, artist Antireal made a post on X claiming that Bungie had stolen some of his art to be used as assets in the game without his permission.

Bungie would eventually reach out to her and settle things, but it was still embarrassing to deal with, especially since they didn't reimburse the troon for his art until like December.

Anyway, back to the game, Bungie kept chugging along with updates to the closed Alphas, until it became very clear that people were NOT happy with the way Marathon was turning out and they needed to do something about it. It was slated for a September release date after all, they only had months to fix the games issues or else it might flop and Sony might come down on them like the wrath of God.

So in June of 2025, they decided to delay their game unitl 2026.
From their post, you can immediately see some of the community complaints that they cited as reasons for the delay

After that, we wouldn't really hear much about Marathon again until December 15th, 2025, when they released a vidoc titled "The Vision of Marathon," which showcased their updated game and the mechanics they had been working on since June.
In January, they gave an update about the "Shells" that players would be able to use as their player character.
Five days later, Marathon became the 5th most preordered game on Steam for a bit

So some people seemed to like the change in direction. Bungie would also announce their open beta weekend, as well as the Launch date, with a trailer.
Since then, they've grown more confident in the game, tweeting and posting new gameplay on their YouTube channel, as well as allowing content creators early access to the game.
They've also recently announced an overhauled anti-cheat for the game, which shows that they're serious, while also making Destiny PVP players absolutely furious. They also seem to be jumping on the Twitter bot bandwagon to try to gain more traction for their game, but that could be speculation.

Also, the dude who makes the game's music looks like this

So will the game be trash? Good? AAAA slop? The next best extraction shooter? Will Bungie be able to do what CoD failed to do, by bringing the extraction shooter genre to the mainstream? Who knows. The Server Slam is February 27th to March 2nd, 2026, for those who want to try it, while the full game releases March 5th for $39.99 for the base edition or $59.99 for the deluxe.
