Is space colonization in the near future a good idea?

Laws of space were written in a vary pie in the sky time. And sure initial attempts at permanent settlement on Mars or where ever might but done as an international effort.

But if it gets to the point where it's not just about "the science" and starts getting practical, say a nation could finance a colony by themselves, that's when they're going to start trying to get neutrality abolished.

Besides nothing can ever be truly neutral when it comes to civilisations and geopolitics. Like the people who would live on Mars would eventually demand some type of reconician.

It's often speculated that the Antarctic Treaty will break down when it becomes economically viable to exploit Antarctica's resources, but we are not there yet, not even close to it. The same dynamic would be in play for Mars, but it would take even longer for holding territory on Mars to be economically rewarding.

The US should have amended the nuclear test ban treaty to allow nuclear pulse vehicles like the Orion project.
Mars in 2 weeks, with technology already available in the mid-60s.

Well that haven't ratified the comprehensive test ban treaty anyway. Them and the Chinese.

Space colonization seems like a misappropriation of time, effort, and money and an incredibly low priority. These scientists have their head in the clouds, as usual.
You people have watched too much Star Trek.
Population levels have been steadily on the rise for a number of years and don't appear to be slowing down.

I think colonization should be investigated now rather than later so we can test just how viable it is and test what kind of technology is needed for such a project. This is currently more practical than trying to discover Faster than Light travel as we already know Mars colonization is doable.

this planet is fucked

space colonization is of course vital to our species, but I don't think it'll happen
Our planet is far from fucked. If you act like it's already too late than you're probably one of the billions currently fucking it.

I dont think the planet is fucked up,all the damage we done would be probably repaired in less than a 100.000 years if we are extinct now.
However,we need a new push for space,a new sputnik or Apollo to push us forward, the sad thing is that I only see a massive anti science and anti intellectualism movement still going.
Also a larger space collaboration should be in place, the U.s should rescind that ban on China and let them join the iss and future projects.
The push for mars should be a multinational effort.

Did you know that treaties can't be unilaterally amended by a single country

63% of Republicans believe that government investment in science pays off. The figures for almost every other group of Americans is even higher.,

We actually live in an era when science and technology are extremely popular, but people like to believe they're part of an enlightened minority.

I read the Russians are planning to install a base on the Moon for 2025-2030.
They have serious plans about that since the 80s,however I think they should have revived the energia booster instead if the Angara family.
The energia could lift more than a 100 tons into Leo,I doubt the most powerful Angara can lift 40 tons.
Either they use several rockets or develop a similar rocket to the sls, something I think they are doing.

The USA had plans to establish a permanent presence on Mars in 2004.

Why do I mention this? To show that "plans" are a pretty meaningless metric for serious commitment to an interplanetary presence.

Sadly, I think the only meaningful reason (for politicians, at least) died when the Berlin Wall fell.
