Mass Effect Andromeda: Shitstorm Edition - RIP Biowear

I don't know about BioWare themselves, but the screeching jackoff who calls himself Film Crit Hulk went on at some length about how beautiful the ending was and how stupid Mass Effect fans were for not appreciating it. I didn't think the ending was the trainwreck most people did (with the caveat that by the time I played the game the Extended Cut was already out, so I only saw the original ending in YouTube clips after the fact), but that was the most over-the-top and obnoxious defense of it I'm aware of.

The thing was the ME 3 team basically lied to everyone's face. There was an interview with one of the directors/producers and he said, verbatim, "The ending won't be A-B-C" and it was exactly A-B-C. And that is typical with I have noticed, people who were completely unprepared for it and people who only saw extended. There was just no preparation for that. The reaction was so visceral was because it was completely counter to what was said by the team. Instead of being storyboarded, or thought out, the ending was on a single sheet of paper and rushed out because of script leaks.

Also Film Critic Hulk is a fucking retard. The ending was a child's interpretation of 2001 and the most pretentious drivel I have seen in a major release by a AAA developer. It was completely different from the tone and theme of the series. It serves as a barometer for who is a pretentious idiot as well.

That and the pre-GobberGoop games media dogpiled on in defense of Bioware and gleefully called ME fans (and gamers in general) entitled for not liking the ending; the smugness and pretentiousness from them was awful. Like expecting an ending that made sense, was based on your actions and choices from the preceding games, and generally wasn't total dog shit was being entitled.

Bioware didn't bother to jump in and say "no hold up guys, our fans aren't any of those labels or blatant insults you're throwing at them at all" in any meaningful capacity. That pissed off even more fans.

The media reaction during ME3 is really what set us down the current path about the gaming press and its audience being extremely antagonistic towards each other. The press sided with corporate over consumers. Bioware lied to people's faces and the media defended them for it.

Bioware didn't defend their fans because they were proud of that garbage. Not to mention being blatant fucking liars and exceedingly petty (if you shot that little faggot Star Child in the face it was instantly the worst ending). They had no idea why their fans were upset because they were just that disconnected. Most people chose to kill the reapers even though Bioware pushed the synthetic ending as the one they wanted. They had no idea how dystopian control and synthesis looked.

Its why Andromeda was so important, to make up for the shitshow thay was 3. Looks like they took the arrogant route again and thought they could pump out anything and get away with it.

If these constant links about why this game is the steaming shit heap everyone said it was are getting tiring, do let me know. Otherwise:

I think it was Casey Hudson who said that. For a while that was one of the biggest fucking lies a game developer sold to gamers. Sean Murray and Randy Pitchford took that dubious award not long after, but still. And I think it was Casey who also said they cut out a final boss fight with the Illusive Man because it was "too videogame-y." My reaction to that statement now is the same as it was when I first read it after ME3:

Not to get too spergy, but ME3's drama with game journos shitting on gamers in favor of defending Bioware/EA absolutely set the stage for GG. In fact I'm still surprised GG didn't start over how the games media and Bioware treated fans and gamers after ME3. Or how the games media and EA/Bioware were far too close. I mean, they killed off a fan favorite news reporter to put in some IGN chick who literally nobody cared about as a character. Instead it all started over some cow named Zoe Quinn and her rancid cunt. Funny how things work out.

That whole "entitled" journalist shitshow was hilarious.
"GAMERS ARE ENTITLED!!!"
Well yeah, you'd think that the people who pay 60 bucks or more for the last game in a series they enjoyed WOULD be entitled to a good game and a satisfying conclusion. Journalists actually acted like there was something wrong with being entitled.
Oh man and when Bioware started spewing out "artistic integrity" that just killed me. Yeah, artistic integrity only applies when there's any sort of integrity to speak of. Wrapping up the series with a deus ex machina, rushed diplomacy because the second game couldn't be bothered to actually have a story about preparing for the Reaper invasion, rgb endings, stock photo waifus, and art stolen from Deviant Art sure screams "artistic integrity" to me. Bioware is really funny when they have their heads stuck up their assholes.

THAT'S THE PHRASE THAT'S BEEN SLIPPING MY MIND. Knew there was something else I wanted to mention about the bullshit excuses they tried to use. You nailed it though.

I forgot all about that fucking "artistic integrity" shit they used to deflect all the criticism. So fucking arrogant and pretentious. I really hope people rub that term right back in their faces if this game flops as hard as people are predicting.

Yeah, I found out about a lot of this long after the fact. I was a late arrival to the ME franchise, as I didn't have much time for video games at the time of the initial release of any of the three of them. I wasn't part of the outrage over ME3 and, honestly, I still like it pretty well. But BioWare definitely did themselves no favors with their reaction to the outcry. I'm completely baffled why they thought ending the series with such vague outcomes for your squadmates was going to go over well when pretty much the main reason people took to these games was because they liked the characters so much.

And yes, synthesis is horrifying. Shudder.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks that. It's a complete enigma to me why that guy is so respected.

How DARE people paying AAA price for a product (never mind potentially hundreds to buy a bunch of bullshit DLC) expect something they actually like for their money!

I guess I can understand how you might cop that attitude if you get all your shit for free as a bribe for giving good reviews of it and then look like an idiot.

This, please.

Probably best if the control system is handed off to a company that's a little less sadistic, though. The Witcher's control system is probably best characterised as a hair shirt in gamepad form.
Won't happen, CDPR has their own Sci-fi game they're working on right now. It's better to just pull the plug on ME and let it just be remembered for the first two.

I know. It's just kinda depressing. The only other thing that's come even remotely close for me in terms of time and energy investment has been Elite Dangerous.

Because you had Casey Hudson and Mac Walters basically lock every other writer out of the planning for the ending. They were solely responsible for it and so caught up in their own 'brilliance' they didn't bother asking for input. (And of course, only Mac was a writer, Hudson was a producer). Of course, that never works out well. Having a writer's room in a series is done for a very important reason: to say if your ideas are shit.

I know this is apples to oranges, but I listened to the podcast of Vince Gilligan when he was making Breaking Bad. He was the series creator and had a writers room, and always wanted his ideas challenged. If he hadn't, the series would have ended up with Jesse and Hank Jr. being killed and Walt torturing some guy. He got called out for his ideas being dumb and the series was better off for it.

Hudson and Walters were so far up their own asses they didn't bother to consult anyone else. Its why they thought it was a good idea. Like Synthesis. Yes, lets bond with genocidal machines who kill any organic life that has a rocket ship. This is totally a good idea! Fucking dumb cunts, I swear.

I don't think he is so much anymore, but people were fucking falling over themselves. It was probably solely due to his shtick and nothing else. He always came off as a pretentious dumbass to me who used the excuse that he talked like the Hulk to brush off any criticisms of his ideas.

Yeah, it was Hudson. You can tell he was up his own ass when he said that and tried to push off his decisions as brilliant. He is like one of those obnoxious film students who is so pretentious it makes you want to vomit. I don't think he is working at any major studio anymore, thank christ

The ending and Bioware's reaction completely soured me on the whole series to be honest. Getting lied to my face and then being treated like shit to have the 'gall' to ask for a decent ending to something I sunk time and money into. I didn't pay full price for all the titles except for the third, but someone who did and bought the DLC invested $180+ dollars.

Yeah, the ME3 drama was just the latest. Zoe was just an excuse that kicked it off. The hate had been simmering for awhile and hasn't really died down.

I actually thought the extended cut was worse for the Refuse ending.

It made all too clear why it even existed:

"You don't like any of my endings? Well fuck you then! Everyone dies!"

Fun fact: A fanmade ending system was put up by the community, basically using a Fallout-style epilogue. It literally went over every major choice Shep made across all three games and gave a series of epilogues based on it. I know one that was popular at the time was this one. If fucking any game would have benefitted from such an ending type, it was Mass Effect.

Also do you guys remember the last screen of the ending before it kicked back to title, before the patch? Because I remember the last screen of the ending before the patch:

"BUY OUR SHIT, YOU ENTITLED FUCK."

Is ... is that supposed to be a female Krogan?

If so, why is that bitch not wearing her hijab, so I can differentiate my space lizards?

I hope it's supposed to be a female Krogan, because ho-ly fuck is that bad if it isn't. I mean it's not great if it is a female, but still. Eve sounded like a chain smoking grandma; which is precisely how you'd expect female Krogan to sound.

I agree that Refuse is ... not good, at all. But holy Christ, I never knew about that original end screen. Yikes! Now I understand why so many people were screaming that they must have saved the real ending for DLC.
