As a girl, I'm basically a jibbering tard when it comes to video games, so any hope I had of playing internet darling Dwarf Fortress with any understanding of what I was doing seemed all but lost. Even the 'Lazy Newb Pack' seemed too advanced for my delicate sensibilities.

That is, until a noble internet virtuoso pointed me toward the MasterworkDF mod pack, and now I can't stop playing.

It is maintained by world mountain biking super-autist Patrick Martin Schroeder (Meph) who has poured over 3000 hours across 5 years into this project that he updates every Friday like clockwork. It is expertly put together, boasting a (relatively) newcomer-friendly interface, Quick Guides for every available race you can play, and a comprehensive guide on how to get started.

He does it all for the pitiful amount of money he makes for this labor on his Patreon, his endless enjoyment of the game, and the love of his fans.

I know it sounds like I'm sucking his dick right now, but seriously - this is criminally underappreciated.

Also, just in case you've never heard of Dwarf Fortress before and you not already sold: It's free.

Oh my god me too! It's so hard being a girl who plays video games hehehe stop hitting on me you silly boys.
You absolute fucking moron. gg again, a lot of girls play games.

We also have a thread on DF. I can play Dorf Fort but I find tedious because my planning is shit, I can't 'plan' big schemes, I am Joel Level of Dorf Fort building, where I flood my base and then open up to candy land so early. I kind of feel like because I have used no

As a girl,
Confirmed Tranny?

So what you're saying is you can't play DF cos you're a girl
I don't have autism to make things like a 70 story dwarf tower that spews both water and magma from it's cup interchangeably.

Rimworld is better
RimWorld is pretty good, but there's still a lot of limitations as to what you can do compared to DF. It's definitely a great gateway game into Dwarf Fortress at the very least - it puts you in the right mindset.

Masterwork is pretty nice, but I found it was a bit of an FPS hog. I've done stuff like megaprojects before, but I find that apathy and a general lack of challenge are the things that put me off the most. Dwarf Fortress is a truly amazing game and I've played it for hundreds of hours, but those time periods usually come after a long break and a new major update hits. Then I do everything I can possibly do in about three weeks of almost non-stop play, burn out, and drop it for another year.

The main issue is that after you've gotten over the 'oh god everyone is starving/drowning/getting eaten by titmouse demons' phase of the game, it becomes remarkably easy to keep things chugging along more or less indefinitely. But then again I'm a shameless powergamer who suffers from a rabid compulsion to craft the perfect home for every dwarf and almost never takes risks that aren't safety netted by around fifty different contingency plans.

I love Masterwork more than vanilla DF. I like being able to do things like make beds and bins from stone instead of wasting wood that I could turn into charcoal/pig iron/steel.

The older versions of Masterwork were even crazier. In the 2014 one, some of your dorfs could have innate elemental skills, which is all well and good until Urist McFirebender gets spooked by a badger and hurls a fireball at it, which burns down the whole overworld.

I'm so used to classic ASCII Dwarf Fortress that I really can't be bothered getting any graphic mods. It'd confuse me more than anything.
