Key element: intent to steal/gain a legal right you don't already have. So "if you don't agree to [contract term], I will bring an action unrelated to the subject of the potential contract" = not ok. But "if you don't do what [court order] requires you to do, I will exercise my legal rights under that order" = likely OK. Affirmative defense to assertion of extortion is good-faith belief that whatever the other person does/does not do gives rise to a legal claim. That doesn't apply to trying to force an agreement beyond what you have a legal right to require.

What makes this a little interesting is my read of the "offer" tweet from Vickers is that he certainly appeared to be linking the protective order he has against Ralph (which Faith is not a party to because she has her own DVRO) to the dispute involving his grandson which is between Ralph and Faith.

The latter Mr. Vickers is not a party to, as he has said time and time again when Ralph tried to link the two things together. Now he appears to have linked them himself in an attempt to strongarm Ralph into giving up his son.

I think the question of whether there is actual potential criminal liability doesn't matter that much, because it runs into the same problem that we now know Vickers did with the diary, which is that it's going to be impossible to find someone who cares.

A person who was in fear of someone wouldn't spend all day everyday publically taunting and poking them to get a reaction.
If Ralph could afford a decent lawyer to make a record of all Vickers's bullshit he could cause Vickers a lot of problems, most Judges look askance at vexatious litigants and general low iQ pains in the ass like Vickers using the legal system to harrass other citizens over personal grudges.
If a full record of the behavior of both parties was presented to a Judge they'd likely both find themselves in contempt and their cases thrown out.
Vickers's restraining order in particular should be very easy to get thrown out if the courts were made aware of Ralph 2's antics on Twitter.

And Faith's husband, if the purpose of the voluntary termination of parental rights is adoption (apparently in CA, voluntary termination is permitted in few instances due to the child's right to a parent-child relationship, and adoption by a parent's spouse is one of them. The terminating parent must file a petition then all parties must appear). I suspect this is why Vickers is claiming he's out of the discussion, because he appears to have been impeding it and potentially jeopardizing the outcome (even if Ralph was never serious in the first place). Shocker if Vickers overplayed his hand and screwed it all up. Should've let a lawyer lead on this instead of playing social media gotcha.

(Side note - a felony conviction is one of the grounds for involuntary termination, but understandably, involuntary termination has a high bar for being granted, and with Ralph purportedly paying some support [wtf do they not have a court order, if they don't?] and having seen Xander at least a time or two, and so thus not probably having legally abandoned the child, the felony conviction alone is unlikely a viable pathway/I speculate but do not know.)

Agree. There's too much chimping by Vickers and Ralph for anyone to be taken seriously. But even a putative appearance of coercion would likely be a bad look for a court considering a voluntary petition, if Ralph showed up with a changed mind even after filing and dropped an accusation during a hearing on the petition. Which he clearly would do. On the other hand, "yer honor, I was drunk and blasted when I agreed to give up my rights, prepared the petition, and filed it, so I want to withdraw it" is a bad look as well.

If Ethan had an ounce of integrity (ha), he would acknowledge that he really doesn't care about Xander at all (except as an extension of himself - "muh progeny," "muh first-born son," "fruit of my loins") as much as he cares about being rid of child support obligations [and again, if they have a handshake or even filed deal for below-baseline support, they should change that asap...interesting, though, that that hasn't seemed to come up at all], and he would terminate his parental claims and rights and just be done.

In general, I think terminating one's parental relationship is a terrible idea if you care about your child and are willing to be involved, and who knows if Faith's bf/fiancé /husband? is a solid-enough guy, but for Ethan, I think relinquishing those rights and never talking about or directly/indirectly interacting with any of the Vickers clan would be the best thing for that little boy. And I say that only because he has shown that he has nothing to offer but slap-fights and public denigration of his son's mother, and seemingly no capacity to refrain from it.

In a normal feud, even as fucked up as the Ralph/Vickers situation, non-affected family members such as Matt's son would be used as venues for at least some arbitration, but Mista Vickas instead uses him for mind games to epically own the Swine-master. Sign what? I think Ralph just needed to agree. It takes quite of bit of paperwork, judge and a court order to forever surrender your parental rights....and in California they really don't care if bio-parents don't want to claim their child they will still go after him to get a small portion of the welfare benefits or foster care costs the state incurs caring for the child so it's actually difficult to legally sever the relationship.

Luckily for Faith:

The documents filed with the court must request termination of parental rights under California Family Code section 7820 and cite one or more of the following: abandonment, neglect or cruelty, substance abuse or moral depravity, a parent's felony conviction, a parent declared developmentally disabled or mentally ill, or a mentally-disabled parent.

The rules are complex, and nobody should try this without a lawyer's representation.

I think Ralph hits not just one, but all of those pre-reqs for termination. It generally a lot easier if a new father wants to adpot. As some lawyer that handles these matters states these requests almost always come from women who want their new husband to adopt the child. Probably a lot harder to accomplish if there isn't an new dad to claim the spot the old one is trying ti relinquish.
