Mattresses: how do I find a good one?

unless you want to spend a shitload, go to your local IKEA and lay on every mattress they have in the showroom until you find one you like

and don't forget the slats

Check out a place like Raymore and Flannigans, etc. or Ikea try the matresses out. Don't fall for their upgrade shit where they try to sell you enough things to make the matress cost the price of a car. Some places will deliver and remove your old matress for free.

Make sure also if you need a boxspring or not.

Is it memory foam y/n?

... no really, I got one two years ago, and sleeping has been more of a joy than it already was.
x2 on this! I got mine over half a decade ago and it still feels like a heaven. I will note that I avoided the cheapest options to play it safe, because I was really tired of terrible beds. Unsure if that has had any bearing on comfort/longevity.

Water beds are really nice too, just a little more of a chore to take down and set up if you move houses often.

Never had a good experience with one. I had an ex who used one of those when we first met. It was recommended by her chiropractor to help with her back that got fucked up from her THIRD car accident (someone rammed into her). The first few times I stayed over her place, we shared the same bed (it was big enough for two), but I was laying on a hill, and couldn't find a comfortable spot. By the 3rd night of barely sleep with a fucked-up back I told her I couldn't do it anymore.

A few days later she got a cheapo memory-foam from Amazon that came in a long-ass box and was rolled up like a tube. Also got a bed frame for it. Never used the water bed since then. Guess she really liked it when I stayed over that she would do something like that, lol.

Do you like firm? Soft? Hybrid? What size?
I don't know, really. I think I lean to the soft side. XL twin.

The old one isn't but I'd consider it for a new one. I think both types are comfy.

I'm a fussy cunt. The best mattress I've ever owned is made by Tuft&Needle. California king, foam, gel, black magic, whatever it is, it's fucking heaven and you are unlikely to complain.

You will spend a thousand dollars, and not regret it.

And for fucks sake get the highest quality sheets you can. Do not sleep in hay.

get a bigger bed
I can't, I'm tiny. :(

I heard the best things to invest in are your mattress and your shoes due to how much time you spend in both, and I believe it. Bedsheets are probably a close third.

I'm inclined to agree - strongly. I'm miserly, and shelling out a grand for a mattress stung like buggery, but I've never regretted it, and they have one of those 90 free trial deals - if you decide not to keep the mattress, it gets donated to a local charity.

With shoes, it's the same deal, and i wear vibram five fingers. Been wearing them for well over a decade. They suck a bit in the rain and snow, but not as much as those toe smushing bullshit 'running shoes' they charge a fortune for.

If you decide to go with t&n, let me know how it works out for you!

Be advised: IRL mattress showrooms can get high-pressure, depending on the sales staff and whether they're circling for kills or distracted by rich people. If you're not sure what kind of mattress you need, though, there's nothing like being able to compare immediately.

After you've flopped on enough mattresses to figure out what you like, be ready to tell them you're almost but not completely sure and you need to bring your husband, which you totally will do tomorrow! Then leave and order a mattress online with delivery.

I don't know what your budget's like, but my experience is that putting a 3" memory foam pad on an existing mattress also solves a lot of problems. Much cheaper, easier to move with if you're in a dorm or something, and in a pinch you can throw it onto the floor to create two barely-adequate sleep locations.
