I honestly would never buy one of these things because
a. I don't trust them to send me good produce, I would rather choose it myself at the store so I can see it before I buy it to ensure it is good and fresh
b. there are TONS of free recipes online with ratings and reviews so you can get an idea of if it will be good or not
c. shit's expensive

I've already put my two cents in but in regards to your first point, I have been told by a few people and can't prove but it's a water cooler rumor they are VERY picky about produce, because they know so many people who use these are not versed in cooking and don't know you can peel a brown spot off and safely eat most things.

For those of your in states that has Safeway Stores, they started a line of prep-kits. I haven't tried all the flavors, but I tasted several of them when the Safeway near my dad was demonstrating on the debut. I thought it was pretty good, but they don't tell you what dishes you need, so I didn't buy it since I still lack a few things. They might not be worth it since it's still only a couple servings, feeds to for $20.

For $10 a meal just go to a damn restaurant. I cook most of my meals from scratch and eat pretty damn well at 1-3 dollars a meal and I'm lazy as shit, it's not hard.

I can make some awesome things with fish and get salmon for $5.99 a lb in China Town and meat cheaply too. My worker helps me make more complex things, but adding meat to Ricearoni is easy, sausages too, even though I should avoid them because the Celery Extract is still a sulfate, just under a different name. I have a diner I go to for things I can make at all and crave. Cooking is surprisingly easy once you learn sauces or buy them made. I have had lobster a few times, one time put the meat into a sauce I made with tomato sauce and sun dried tomatoes with vinaigrette and linguine. It was so heavenly. It was about $8 per serving when I made that, the lobster was $12 for a live one in China Town. I can do it with hamburger for a few bucks a serving.

A friend of mine had coupons for a free week of Hello Fresh so I've tried that. That particular week was fine but I noticed when looking through their upcoming menus that there would have been weeks when I struggled to find 3 things I wanted to eat from the choices available.

I think it's great for people who are time poor and find the whole planning menus and grocery shopping tedious. It's marketed at people who would otherwise eat out or order takeaway, so it's not really expensive compared to those options (McDonalds or KFC will cost you more than $10 per person here).

All of their recipes are online, so if you're just after inspiration you can just pick some and buy the ingredients yourself, although not all of the ingredients can be found at your local supermarket.

I’ve never tried a meal box, but I was given a subscription to Saloonbox for a couple of months as a gift. It was kind of neat in that it gave you everything you needed to make two servings of two different drinks. It wasn’t something I’d pay for continuously, but it was a fun gift. I learned that I despise gin.

I've been buying Hello Fresh to eat every week for about 2 years.
PROS
  • Don't have to go grocery shopping except for stuff that doesn't ship well like butter
  • Don't have to think about what I'm going to eat
  • I've been losing weight because I don't eat anything else and it forces me to portion control
  • Food is pretty delicious
  • Food is fresh and I know no one is spitting in my food except me
  • Learning to cook is relaxing and fun
CONS
  • Expensive: I'm spending ~140USD/wk (however this is about half of my old weekly DoorDash bill of 300/wk)
  • Sometimes they forget shit or stuff explodes/gets smashed in transit
  • Sides dishes are pretty limited: It's typically green beans, roasted carrots or potatoes
I would recommend if you hate walking around grocery stores and have cash to burn.

I've jumped into places like this before but aside let me tell you.
Youre on that half prep cycle that kills people. Bro/broette, youre dropping 7 dollars a day for green beans!

You have basic knife skills down and despite how brave you are for basic cooking, hit markets youre ahead. But take those skills and branch out. You are that good. Also what you pay them if you fuck up bad 2 chicken breasts at walmart with no tag how to vs them is still way less.

I don't want to bash places like this because while I cooked before was a thing it locks most people into it but some see this is ez and skip it and grow.

Lastly if you are a body builder lol they short you.

Taking the plunge and ordered from Home Chef for one to two weeks per month. I am moderately skilled at cooking but been looking to try some new recipes and seeing how they turn out.

Is this going to be a permanent thing?
Probably not. Going to use their promotion to rip off some recipes.
