Mech Sims - Beyond Battletech

The Timber Wolf and the Dire Wolf are unexcusable, though. Those are 'mechs that were perfectly well-modeled in previous games, I have no idea how their artists managed to screw the pooch so hard with them.

Could be because of how they had to make everything modular in MWO so that takes a lot of modeling.

Not sure if we consider eastern mech sims in topic but Daemon X Machine fills the void that Armored Core left empty. It's not that great, but good enough. What's the word on MechWarrior 5?

Not played it. Take what I'm about to say with a grain of salt.

Last I heard, the Steam release was delayed because of either Cyberpunk or the coof. It's on Steam now, along with the DLC, but I've not heard a thing about the DLC as no one talks about the game any more.

Most complaints about the game were things I don't care about. People saying the customisation isn't the same as MW2, no clan mechs, the story being a revenge quest, and specific mech and weapons were nerfed.

I don't know if the game has been fixed, but the one issue it had on release that was a deal breaker to me was enemy tanks would spawn directly behind the player.

But like I said, I've not heard a peep about the game since they announced the delay of the Steam release. I assume it's been overshadowed by other things.

MW5 is fun with friends, about the only good I can say about it. It just feels rushed and bleh.

It's better than MWO though but that's not saying much. Wait for MechWarrior : Living Legends II to drop.

I like MechWarrior, Armored Core, Chromehounds, Starsiege, Heavy Gear, et cetera.

When the FUCK are From gonna come out with another Armored Core? It has been eight goddamn years! Daemon X Machina was fine, but it wasn't enough to tide me over. I need my AC fix!

Its improved a fair bit. Its never going to be great. Good though... its definitely going to hit that. But yes, the mechs and weapons are... iffy. Due to how PGI calc'd engine to mass most assaults are slower than they should be, customization is barely better than MW4's, weapons and equipment use MWO stats as their base, so jumpjets are worse than useless given they take up tonnage and slots. Story is... what the hell were you expecting? I mean, yeah, its terrible, but what else is new in video games? If you do play it, get the Yet Another Mechlab and TableTopAI mods at minimum.

I didn't mind MW4's customisation. I've not played a significant amount of MW2, but I agree with Examined Life (of Gaming)'s MW retrospective videos where he says the customisation in MW2 is too open and allows for idiocy. Mech games have a problem with min-maxing already, so making that more open, keeping to tabletop rules, and expecting it to be balanced seems like a recipe for disaster.

I missed the boat when it came to MW. I keep hearing how MW games have deep, amazing stories. Trying to go back to the games after the fact, I can't find said stories.

In MW4 Mercinaries, you can side with Davion or Steiner, but the game gives no information on them or why I should side with one over the other. I assume that's covered in the dozens of paperbacks that are long out of print, and I don't want to read dozens of books just to understand a shooty robot game.

The same goes for things people fanboy over. I don't get why people think Dominic Paine is cool. He seems to be a generic army man NPC to me. Battletech is also a revenge story, but no one complains about that story.

It is. One of the key things about BattleTech is that 'Mechs come in different models and makes, and sometimes you just can't get the one you want so you have to make do with a less than optimal variant. MechWarrior games have this habit of turning every 'Mech into an OmniMech on steroids, which allows players to just boat the most powerful weapons, change armor profiles completely, and even swap out entire engines. And then people complain that the meta in MWO is "toxic". Fuck, I remember people whining about boating builds back in the days of MW4. Give players the option and they'll optimize the fun out of the game.

I don't get it either. I still have my MW4 Vengeance manual here and that was an amazing little piece of in-universe lore, so I imagine it's like that with Mercenaries as well. These games came out back when games actually had manuals you were supposed to read for gameplay and lore information. It's like people discussing the "lore" of old console games like Super Mario Bros. 3. The only "lore" you got in that game was in the manual.

When you install Vengenace the game plays small snippets of Battletech lore to try to give you a feel for the scenario. Thing is though that imho the lore presented is faulty / lacking parts. Vengenace is also part of the real lore in the lore book for the FedCom Civil war the battle for Kentares IV is a bit flashed out. though in the book Ian Dresari is the only living member of his family (and the Black Knight add on never happened)

Too bad no one ever tried to replicate the old LAPD future cop game which came out on PS1. That was a fun little game where you play as a pilot of a Police Mech that can also transform into a hover tank. It also had a fun 1V1 game mode which was in essence like LoL but on a much smaller scale. And playing against the AI was also nice especially when the AI started shit talking you

This thread makes me want to try out Battletech but I know little about is besides giant robots. What would be a good place to start?

I don't know of any really good short primers for the game, but you could always start with Sarna.net, one of the best damn wikis on the internet, and there's always the BattleTech thread if you want to ask questions.

My advice as someone who came in late and is largely an outsider to Battletech, I'd recommend the following-

  1. Razorfist's Battletech introduction (mandatory)
  2. MechWarrior 4 Mercenaries
  3. Examined Life (of Gaming)'s MechWarrior Retrospective
  4. Front Mission 3 Battletech
I've not played MW5 so I can't comment on how beginner friendly it is.

My reasons why.

Razorfist's video is the closest thing to a simple, concise Battletech primer. As mentioned my previous post, the games I've played throw you in at the deep end and expect you to know what the fuck is going on, who's who, who's doing what, the tone of the game, etc.

MechWarrior 4 Mercenaries was released for free years ago, but was made un-free later, but the links to download it are likely floating around. It's the only one I've played that actually works on modern hardware and isn't complete shit. There is this annoying habit with Battletech fans that every game or book is a timeless classic, until you try to play/read it at which point they claim it was one of the bad ones and narrow the field.
MW1 and MW2 work on DOSBox I'm told.
MW3 is allegedly "the best one" but good luck finding a copy and getting it to work.

Examined Life of Gaming reviewed all the computer games from MW1 to MechAssault 2, but focuses on collecting and compatibility.

Battletech, despite being known as Trannytech, is the closest I came to understanding what the fuck is going on with the story. It requires no real setting knowledge, but the game is RNG heavy and grindy. I think Front Mission 3 is the better gritty mech themed tactical RPG.

I might as well mention the MechWarrior cartoon that is on YouTube. It feels rushed, but covers the clan invasion story line as a story and not a wiki. MechWarrior Living Legends is a multiplayer mod that is free (it mods a demo of Crysis) and is a pain to get working, but is amazing to play. I don't know if it still has players.

And as @Corn Flakes said, there's the Battletech thread.

If you can get it to work I would recommend Mechwarrior 3 or Mechcommander 2. Yes you need to know the lore but imho it comes closest to the real rules of Battletech in regards to setting up your Mech (Mechwarrior 3 that is not Mech Commander 2). I for one hate the options you get in MW4, MW online and Battletech (probably because I came into Battletech from the tabletop rules and there youi can essentially customize your Mech as you want and I spend hours making new Mechs or developing new configurations for known Mechs)

When I actually played it I was sort of disappointed that Deamon X Machina wasn't actually Armored Core, it was Zone of the Enders with AC parts. Not that that's an awful thing to be but it wasn't really what I wanted.

So this thread is long since dead but I recently discovered something that I think is super cool, it's the natural evolution of Steel Batallion. As I imagine you know, Steel Batallion: Heavy Armor for the Kinect aimed to allow the player to reach around inside of the cockpit and it was a huge critical failure because the Kinect was not very good at tracking.

However, by way or much more accurate VR tracking, Iron Rebellion aims to become the series' spiritual sucessor and achieve what Steel Batallion: Heavy Armor failed to do. This game has been in active development for 3+ years and the official development roadmap leads me to believe that it will be leaving Early Access by the end of this year. Most VR mech games just feel like an FPS with a few more HUD elements but Iron Rebellion actually lets you fiddle with the controls of the cockpit. Granted, it doesn't have as many buttons and switches as the original Steel Batallion controller but it has enough to controls to properly immerse the player. There are three weight classes of mech and around a large variety of weapon loadouts.

For now, the game is team multiplayer only and being a very niche kind of game, the playerbase is primarily limited to users of the game's official Discord but the devs do intend to create a single-player campaign. I think that it shows a lot of promise. I especially think @Judge Dredd may be interested, as I have seen you in The VR Thread.

I have seen that. Looks great, but ignored it due to being MP only. I didn't know they were planning on adding single player

There was another VR only MP only mech game called Rigs, but that was a sports game.

Vox Machinae is another one that does what Iron Rebellion does. Had a full single player campaign, but is supposedly quite boring. It appears they've added flatscreen support.

Addendum: the BattleTech board/wargame also takes approximately 500 years to complete a single match if you have more than eight 'mechs per side. Or any number of 'mechs if you're running any Advanced/Experimental rules.

(Still love it, though.)
Unless your the Cinci crew. But I theorize that they are either eldritch horrors that our minds can't physically grasp who anal probing aliens.

But if your not into the Battletech shit but into Armored Trooper Votoms then this game is pretty neat.

Heavy Gear.

Link is reddit but the they have both Heavy Gear 1 & 2 and a simple guide to get it running on modern systems. Both games where made by the minds behind Mechwarrior 2 & MW2:Mercs. Give it a go and hope you have some fun zipping around blasting arms off of Gears.
