Mechanical Keyboard Autism Thread - Because Cherry MX switches get you laid.

I just built a slate Tokyo60 (HHKB layout) with MKUltra foam, Drop MT3 Susuwatari keycaps, Everglide V2 stabilizers (lubed with some dielectric bulb grease from O'Reilly's), an LED diffuser, and TTC Matrix-01 53g tactile switches. It sounds pretty damn nice:

I knew shit was about to go down in 2020 so I got a spare satan gh60 pcb. A month later and whoosh they're gone. Like smoke or a fart. Nowhere to be found. They say they were just old models but I have my doubts. What do you think happened to all the boards?

For me, it's gateron yellow btw.

The rest of the parts came. I got a beige Novelkeys NK87 and the Cherry Stone keys, but I didn't use any of the colored accents, just the beige keys. I threw a bunch of Kailh Box Navy switches in there. So, it looks and feels like something from the 80s, and you can tell a buddy "Oh, yeah, that's just some shitty old keyboard I got off eBay", until you bust a gut laughing as they pick up what looks like an old yellowed plastic keyboard only to find out that it's like a hundred pounds of cerakoted aluminum and has RGB under-lighting. :smug:

Don't like the RGB, but quite nice aesthetically otherwise.

I don't either. I plan to keep it disabled in VIA, pretty much. That particular keycap set comes with a number of colored accents in yellow, orange, and aquamarine, but I didn't use those.

After testing each switch, I hit 118 words per minute on the Tokyo60 and 122 words per minute on the NK87 on Monkeytype, so they definitely work.

Keychron Q1 is... Really good? Feels a lot less stiff than GMMK Pro, hasn't had any of the QC problems GMMK had (motherfucking key chatter - I could overlook the stiffness and the GMMK Pro stabs being kind of crappy but the making of bad PCBs leading to keys repeating was unforgiveable). Also includes the aviator cable if you're into that - my view is that it looks nice with the right setup but isn't a big deal, although supposedly there's some benefit in terms of how the connection wears when you're not plugging and unplugging the USB cable directly all the time.

I'd like one extra key so I didn't have to choose between having a print screen key and a volume knob, but that's down to preference. Some people don't like that there's a bit of a ping when you hit keys in the main cutout, but it doesn't bother me. Seems very good for anyone who's kind of interested in the keyboard scene but doesn't want to bother assembling their own or paying $500+.

Also I hate to say it but I've finally found a game where the 'gaming' keys with their super short travel time are actually clearly superior - Tekken. Since button press timings can sometimes you be 1/60 of a second precise, you need to have the most precise control possible. I imagine it's the same for all fighting games. Or you could get a Hitbox or stick setup but that's a whole different area of autism and isn't clearly superior to the keyboard other than having buttons that are slightly more spread out.

Suggestions for affordable (<150€, preferably <100€) mech keyboard? Don't know about keyboards much. I really should just go and do some research, but I figured I'd ask here.firsr, since I assume you know what is the best bang for the buck models.

Most of my life I just bought cheap ass membrane ones, so I won't be too hard to please. My current one is a mechanical Logitech full-sized one. It's 6 years old now and I think it's time to retire it. I'd rather have one without the numpad this time. Though not too cramped, since I have fat fingers.

Edit: don't care about fancy colous of the keycaps or RGB.

Shoot me some suggestions of what you think would be good, if you'd like.

I would take a look at Keychron keyboards. They've only gotten better since I last checked them out and they use good quality switches. Since you don't like cramped keyboards and want one without a numpad, I suggest checking out the K8 model.

Thank you very much. Appreciate it.

I'm using a Keychron K2 V2 ontop of my shitty laptop keyboard and it's pretty good. I don't really like low profile keys and using the laptop palm rest is a little difficult but aside from that, it's perfectly acceptable.

FYI If you're a Linux user you gotta do some extra stuff to get the function keys working properly and if you want to disable the laptop keyboard you'll have to run some commands. Disabling the laptop keyboard is a tedious pain in the ass on Windows, easiest way I've found in Device Manager is to change the view to "Devices by container" then uninstall (or disable if available) any keyboards under the top node.

I got it with Gateron Browns (mechanical, not optical)

Here's a video of me typing this phrase: "Extra vegetated terraces were reseeded afterwards as we recreated a devastated desert"

Got a Dygma Raise recently because I really wanted to try an ergo mech but didn't want to go all in with ortholinear yet. I modded it with Gateron milky yellow pro's, lubed them with 205g0 for the switches and gpl 105 for the springs. Also replaced the keycaps with xda type caps. The tenting kit you can buy with it is pretty necessary and I don't know why they don't just ship it with the keyboard. Overall, extremely happy with the performance, feel, and sound. I will admit even being adequate with this still doesn't make me want to jump to something like ortholinear (ergodox, moonlander) any time soon though.

Frens, any idea if this is any good? Mostly looking for a mechanical keyboard that has multimedia keys (being on a laptop for 7 years has spoiled me) and RGB that isn't too obnoxious.
