Media with Good Plot Twists - the reader was actually gay the entire time~!

Are plot twists just excuses for not being able to write a good story?

needless to say, SPOILER ANY ACTUAL TALK OF THE TWISTS - also tell me if theres a better board for this i notice there isnt a general media board but this is called multimedia so i assume it goes here

I recently was thinking about fight club and how good of a plot twist it has and it got me to thinking more about plot twists in general.
most of the time plot twists are fucking retarded and dont actually add anything to a piece of media but on occasion they can make the piece far better than it would have been without it, i would like to create a list of some great pieces of media with twists so good that you actually start to notice different things on a second viewing that allude to the twist which breathes new life into the story.
here is just a few examples that i know of and consider good, not listed in any order but i did put the anime as last since i know you people have no taste.

1. Dark City
most science fiction works usually have some sort of plot twist in them but i think dark city takes the cake for just how interesting it is. sadly the ending is not very good especially because they decided to do the classic "ruin the integrity of your entire movie with a shitty fight scene" that a lot of movies have fallen victim to but since its near the end i think it can be excused since the majority is still great.

2. Tales from the Gas Station: Bedside Manor
its a decently short read that also has a great audio version if you can put aside the narrators soy filled voice. this is a sidestory from the tales from the gas station books that takes a slightly more serious tone than townsends usual works and because of this is much more enjoyable than the confusing lore of the main series, which is nice especially because bedside manor doesnt reference much from the main storys and introduces characters in a way that doesnt need you to have read tales from the gas station. this story has one of the most insane plot twists i have ever witnessed in any piece of media and i implore you to read it simply to see it for yourself.
you know its strange maybe jack is just a bumbling idiot or hired retards to make his website but unfortunately chapter 1 just isnt on his websites page for bedside manor so i would just pirate the story if you wish to read it or listen to the audio version on youtube

3. Spec ops: the Line
might aswell round this short list off with a game since i did say "media"
say what you will about this game and how its a pretentious piece of shit but for a third person shooter it did atleast try to actually have some semblance of a good story and i can respect the twist for being so unabashedly insane coming from a game where you fight sandniggers in a giant sinkhole and are somehow meant to empathize with said sandnegroes. honestly speaking i did like it and despite it not actually being very deep or well thought out it fits the semi serious tone they went for with the game so i can atleast say they tried.

4. Omori
this game just popped into my head as i was thinking about other games that have tried doing the whole moralfaggotry narrative in a game and while omori doesnt actually do this its still in the same vein.
i do actually reccomend omori if not for the story then for the gameplay since its one of the better rpg's ive played. maybe im just a midwit but i didnt actually see the plot twist coming and i have heard from others that it was pretty obvious to them, nevertheless its a good twist and is quite shocking if you dont see it coming.
even if you dont want to play the game due to everything surrounding it (mostly its creator and subsequent fans) i still think you should play it as you may be suprised at how good and weirdly lighthearted it is, also theres no gay shit in it despite what many may think so just give it a chance. do keep in mind tho the beggining is a slog filled with way too much exposition but once you get past that it really opens up.

5. Higurashi no naku koro ni, or in english When they Cry.
an anime based on the original higurashi VN. it follows the questions arc which as titled brings about questions surrounding the strange village of hinamizawa while only giving a few answers towards the very end, its filled with plot twists especially during the second season where the answers arc is covered but im not too big a fan of the second season as it has a lot of problems that modern anime has and devalues the series to a certain point tho is still worth a try if you liked the first season.
specifically theres a plot twist during the middle of season 1 regarding a certain character that in hindsight is pretty easy to see coming but nonetheless is very good and comes as a big suprise when its revealed. every episode after that subplot is a bit less quality unfortunately since things get very convoluted but its still a great watch.

What plot twist? It has a very different story from the standard military shooter fare, but there's no twist that I recall. It just gradually descends into madness.
its been awhile since i played but from what i remember the twist is that your character is insane and made up conrad as an imaginary justification for all the violence he brought with him and all the scenarios for the atrocities he committed were just delusions to justify to himself why he kept going along with his campaign of carnage. the end credits or maybe a cutscene show many of the scenes you come across and show what really happend revealing that they were just delusions.

Whether a story has a plot twist or not isn't as important as how the plot twist is revealed, imo. I really liked how the game's loading screen tips escalate from basic game advice to reassuring you that you're still a good person to things like "Kill a man, and you are a murderer. Kill everyone, and you are a god."

these are probably all kind of dumb for an adult, but i was a little kid at the time so i enjoyed them very much

1) the empire strikes back
'i am your father' does hit pretty hard the first time you see it

2) knights of the old republic
i was really caught off guard by the reveal that you were actually playing as revan the whole time

3) warcraft 3: reign of chaos human campaign
"succeeding you, father!" was super sick when i first saw it

4) warcraft 3: the frozen throne ending (the best of them all)
arthas ascending to the frozen throne and putting on the lich kings helmet really blew me away

Oldboy, the original Korean version is hands down one of my favorite movies, specifically recommended simply because of the twist.
I usually dont like asian movies unless they are my beloved anime kawaii desu desu but this movie actually looks good i think im gonna give it a watch.

The movie before it and the movie after it are also both worth watching. You may also randomly enjoy Attack the Gas Station.

As far as twists and stuff, read all 28 books in the Lone Wolf and Cub series. That has some really good twists and setups/payoffs.

The Orphanage (2007) : Laura intends to reopen the orphanage she was adopted from as a home for disabled children, along with her husband Carlos and her son Simon. Simon goes missing, and the story revolves around her increasingly desperate efforts to find him as everyone else, even Carlos, loses hope. It's a horror movie, but don't go in expecting actual scares, just consider it a thriller/drama. The ending is gut punch, and all the horror elements are very smoothly integrated as the story build towards the twist. If you are reading this years from now and the remake somehow has been released, disregard it and just watch this original spanish version.

Yakuza 0 : There's a twist just after the middle point about a central character that is very effective. I won't say much, just play the game even if you've never heard of the Yakuza games, it's one of the best ever made.

Dhrishyam (2013) : I know Bollywood has a well earned, terrible reputation outside of India, but towards the south, there has been a new artistic movement toward making films that are as realistic as possible, disregarding the usual bollywood tradition and putting much higher emphasis on the writing and acting, called the Malayalam New Wave. Dhrishyam was one of the movies that really kicked this off. This is a crime thriller about Georgekutty, a simple man. His daughter is recorded while showering by a classmate during a school trip, who uses this to coerce her into sex. Georgekutty's daughter and wife murder the man, and the rest of the film is an intense police procedural where the local police and federal detectives attempt to find the body and the killers, and Georgekutty has to save his family from the law. I highly recommend this. The movie was remade in other languages by far inferior directors and actors, please just watch the original malayalam version from 2013.

Crosscode: Crosscode is a very enjoyable game, and it has well written characters who are both likeable and realistic. This is why the twist introduced during the third act is so effective, because it not only changes the nature of the character, but it is followed by an intense sequence where the main character goes through a severe emotional crisis. This is done after giving you enough time with the main character to like her, root for her, and look forward to finishing what could have been the main story with her. I won't clarify more than this, and the game is slowly being forgotten now, so I highly recommend playing it. One tip I can give is that even though it's an open world hack n' slash with exp and other elements, the game has been so well crafted that you almost never have to grind in the main game unless you really want certain equipment for min-maxxing.

The Mist (2007) : This is a well known movie, typically considered among the best Stephen King adaptations. Even though I knew of the twist before, but you get so immersed in the world that when the twist happens, it remains extremely effective.

The plot twist in the first Scream is still legendary, IMO. It doesn't work as well in the rest of the series, since you already know the formula and it just becomes a guessing game of who the killer is.

Friday the 13th (1980)
Especially if your only contact with the series was watching the later entries, or indirectly through pop culture.

Sleepaway Camp (1983)
To quote its Wikipedia article: Its twist ending has been distinguished by audiences and critics as one of the most shocking in the slasher genre's history, as well as in cinema history in general.

I feel the same about the twist in the first Saw movie. The twists in the rest of the series got ridiculous with revealing "x character was in cahoots with Jigsaw all along" and that only seemed to work with Amanda in Saw II.

The plot twists in A Song of Ice and Fire are good because they feel earned and make a lot of sense when you look back and realize what led to them. The show didn't realize that.

Bishock's midway plot twist is still one of the best in video games. Actual subversion of the player blindly doing whatever the NPC companion voice tells em to do.

This just makes me incredibly sad for the good old days of WoW...playing with all my goon friends long before SA turned into Tranny Central Station when we were all just goofy little internet kids. Ganking and bullying other players in classic WoW before it was actually "classic". Talking shit on the forums. Rolling deep into raids with 39 other people and cracking jokes on vent. Progression. Trying to grind for High Warlord and getting beaten by the kids who had brothers or friends to play their account 24/7 and top the honor charts each month and beating you because you had a real life, being pissed about it at the time but would kill to have those days back now. flaunting hard earned pvp titles and phat loot. Being part of a community that made you feel like you belonged, long before every community on the internet became political echo chambers. Rolling into BC and WOTLK on launch day like a derailed train and dominating arenas with good friends, living the best days not knowing they were never going to get better. I'm not crying
