I want a gun but am worried I’ll shoot myself one day. Any suggestions?
Good advice here already. I was in a pretty dark spot in 2019 and getting into shooting was what ended up helping me. It's a fantastic adrenaline dump and it got me out of the "go to work and deal with my shithead boss, go home and sleep to do the same tomorrow" cycle and gave me something to look forward to on weekends. My town is also super gun friendly so it was easy to make friends that shared a common interest/have people with more experience teach me. We have back up gun matches every month but they're super casual, everyone just shows up to have a good time.Keep it in a locked safe, and the bullets in an inaccessible location. Most suicide deaths from guns occur because it seems like a quick solution. Similar thoughts occur with other suicide methods, where the most effective deterrent is making it difficult or lengthy to actually pull off, giving you more time to become clear headed.
Guns are fun, but need to be respected for sure. If this seems like too much of a risk for you, don't risk it. You can have fun with a buddies gun, or rent one at a cool range. Guns can be enjoyed without bullets even, with laser training systems for stuff like quick draw and bullseye training. Lots of people don't even shoot their guns, they just build them because they are like legos when you get to AR platform builds.
So whatever capacity you end up interacting with guns, welcome to the Mega Rad Gun Thread![]()
If you're looking for handguns, definitely try before you buy. What one person likes you might hate due to how it fits in your hand, recoil impulse, sights, etc. If you have friends/family that shoot pretty regularly, have them take you along so you can try out what they have as well as (hopefully) having someone with you to walk you through safe handling and proper shooting techniques.
Best of luck to you.
