You're not wrong. I bought an 8529 for a friend's housewarming gift. I was surprised by how nice the barrel and the receivers are on those. They have some basic bitch furniture but that's easy enough to change.

For CPR of 5.56, do keep in mind it will continue to rise and be harder to find in stock cases/bulk of it as we get closer to the election. So yes, $.47/round is still fucking insulting but it's not getting better anytime soon. Stock up while you can if you can.
I'm not worried about an ammo shortage. The stock is there, it's just that the prices have barely come down since 2021. 9mm is like the weird exception because my LGS had boxes of Magtech steel case for $12 yesterday.
Just do a cheap AR build. I have less than $600 in my most recent one (I admit that having some of the parts at hand because I'm a serial builder helped here). That Ruger at your local shop would also probably not be a bad call. The aftermarket exists to tune it to your particular needs and nothing has an aftermarket like the AR platform.
Honestly you guys are making a good case for a basic bitch 5.56 AR. I can get ammo/accessories as I go if I do grab it. I plan on moving to the city (state has decent gun laws for now, but guess which place votes for more restrictions all the time) to be closer to my GF so I'm a bit worried about potential future roomates seeing my "assault rifle" and freaking out.

Easy solution. Don't pick shitty roommates.

probably because the ammo companies got fucked during the trump slump and don't want it to happen again. during the worst of it (the best for us though) they couldn't hardly give ammo away. it hit guns too. I remember seeing new Winchester 1886s at budsgunshop in Lexington KY for $990. MSRP is almost 1,700 dollars.

How long did the Trump slump even last? I never really experienced it because I lived in California during that era. Shit definitely picked up after Parkland though and then the pandemic perma fucked the market in a lot of ways.

I bought the cheapest completed upper and lower I could find and it's a perfectly fine rifle. As for potential roommates, just keep the thing in a lockable case and do your best to keep it out of sight and either get a safe or get a lock for where you store it.

things were good from like 16-18 as far as i can remember. unfortunately i was not old enough to buy guns for the first part of the slump.

So the AR hunt continues. I took a real close look at the AR 556 and it's $529 and barely used at all. But
A challenger approaches. Another shop near me has a Bushmaster XM15 E2S HBAR for $700. I did some research and I THINK the serial number on it means that it's pre Freedom Group. It's a pretty cool piece of early commercial AR's and the heavy barrel means shit's got some range to it. I just don't know, Kiwibros.

I will always shill building your own lower and getting a BCM upper

I'm an HBAR fag so I say go for it. Putting that money towards something like an Aero lower and BCM upper should also be heavily considered. I can see why this isn't a simple choice.

I've done exactly this and I can assure you all it's a great way to get a reliable rifle.

Me too, I'm in the middle of building another. Gonna wait for a decent sale to pick up an 11.5 mk2

M4 -> M4A1 conversion, 1994, note that serial number ranges are in blocks, so a high SN might be found on earlier issued weapons

there's also the Air Force GAU-5A (US Army XM177, later XM177E1 with forward assist, E2 with the new grenade ring for mounting the M203) and GUU-5P which were Colt 609 and 610, with the 609 literally being marked "AR-15 Commando", and the 610 having no forward assist (the 610B with a 4 position safe/semi/burst/auto FCG), but these aren't really "M4's" anymore and are closer to the original Commando concept.
I might be a Kalashnikov kid but there's something about those old school AR types that I find aesthetically pleasing, even if it's not wood and steel.

I'm a strong advocate for building your own rifle when it comes to ARs. You can get a much higher quality rifle than a pre-built rifle for the same money, and have everything the way you want it from the get-go. Even if you buy an assembled upper and lower separately and slap then together, it's usually cheaper than a complete rifle from the factory.

It's also fun making things from parts that should never be combined, nothing beats having a nightmare build that should not be fired either due to excessive recoil or muzzle blast

Used premade AR's are just as cheap as a mid tier build though. I think making an HBAR would actually cost more than a premade used one.

Speaking of sights, I saw this and felt a need to share

Operator as fuck.

I can see drone shotguns branching off into various directions, from small under-barrel general purpose ones to more specialized longer barrel "defensive" variants. There's also room for purpose-designed ammunition, maybe something like tungsten bird shot, with mini shell variants allowing for higher ammo capacity for shorter under-barrel shotguns.
I can see it now, the Squad Drone Defense Weapon, using something like a rimless 12-Gauge or 16-Gauge shell with a rounded nose. Not actually sure what shot is best for drones, does any light birdshot cut it, or would you want something with more punch like number 4 buck?

the ATF's hateboner for revolving shotguns
There's this idea that they have a ruling about revolver shotguns specifically, but I am not aware of any, it was just the Treasury Department which changed the legal definition of couple of specific shotguns after some political lobbying, which include the Striker and Streetsweeper family, as well as the Daewoo USAS-12.

"GLOCKs wit da switch and da tiddy hangin' awf
I can't lie, I get a good giggle from referring to a drum magazine as the gun's "titty."

ruling about revolver shotguns specifically
It's in relation to AWBs (both the sunset federal version and individual state bans) that restrict revolving shotguns, undefined importability due to the "sporting" clause, and indecisive responses from ATF in response to "Would this be legal" letters.
Shotguns are a headache with the ATF involved.

You can get a decent AR for about $400:

Birdshot should do, just need to take out a controller, a battery, or a couple of propellers to bring the whole thing down. Or just damage the wiring enough. Most have exposed internals for weight savings so not much in the way of protection.

one of those cringe Rossi .357s with the American flag etched on the side
I think it looks pretty. Even if it's funny to decorate a Brazilian rifle with the American flag. Do some polishing on the internals to make it all smooth, and maybe refinish the wood, and you'd got a very nice rifle.

And marlin was just that bad under Remington. it was not uncommon to buy a new Marlin and have it rusted out of the box, jam immediately (sometimes in a way that was not fixable without a gunsmith taking the gun apart) or have broken stocks.
I'm kicking myself for not saving the image, but MANY years ago I saw someone on /k/ unbox a Remlin which had the straight wrist stock, but with the lever for a curved one.

and will burn the fuck out of my support hand after firing maybe a magazine.
I've seen people cutting up and perforating old Coca-Cola cans and reshaping them to fit them underneath the handguard as a heatshield. Supposedly this helps.

IIRC the lever style safety was the original and the push button was the newer version. And yeah, the SPAS has a rubber buffer internally that ends up drying out and crumbling. They're a bitch to replace since Franchi doesn't make them anymore and I'm sure they have long run out of NOS parts.
You can actually get replacement buffers, Spas12 Project makes them, aside from other spare parts.
https://www.spas-12.com/
You should NOT shoot a SPAS-12 in automatic mode if the buffer is dried out or missing, that'll make the recoil more nasty and it'll beat up the receiver.
