Taurus has put out a lot of crap, so they earned that reputation. S&W revolver quality has gone to shit as well. Some of the more minor issues that they have existed pre-Hillary hole, but they insist upon not improving anything, only slowly making everything worse, not the least of which is retaining the stupid internal lock.
their semi autos are not good, at least the pt-22 is hot garbage and the disposable 9mms are just a tier above saturday night specials. plus the finish on their revolvers is just flat out cheap, your choices are phosphate black or bead blasted steel and that's a big deal to people. The one thing i have to say that illustrates that taurus isn't retarded is that when they added a hillary hole they put it on the hammer so nobody got upset about it.

i will say every time i google stuff about tauruses i run into someone who is trying to fix some $200 gun, taurus wants them to ship their gun back and they refuse and do it, they try and repair it themselves, break the gun because they did something stupid, and get mad at taurus now refusing to help. i dont know how much of that is inflated expectations from boomers or actually poor service from taurus

a cheap PT92 isn't a terrible option, and RIA makes a 9mm 1911 pistol that accepts pretty much any aftermarket magazine. you can also find S&W semi-autos for reasonably cheap all things considered a used SD9 or 4567 (or be a man and get a 1006) is a pretty good deal, the 4567 might have a slightly higher ammunition cost, but they "min max" the magazine constraint, have a large knowledge base to draw on, spare parts are available and somewhat interchangeable, and have a very good track record and build quality. yes that includes the PT92.

the Steyr S40 might also be an option, similar feel to the S&W Sigma, modern design, although a bit expensive.

it's very difficult to beat a used LEO-trade-in Glock 22 or 23, and limited capacity mags and aftermarket is widely available and inexpensive.

Ruger and Magpul are making a gen 3 glock clone, might have FCU functionality. Being a Ruger and Magpul project it might be competitive with the PSA Dagger

I'm actually pretty sure it has FCU functionality because Magpul has an empty page on their site for "RXM grips"

Yet another gen 3 glock clone that hoodrats can illegally convert to full auto and kill each other with (although maybe not as the FCU might interfere with that, can you use a switch with an OZ9?)

Some kind of weird French HK416 modification, forward charging obviously and those slots are non Mlok oh and the French might be doing rifle grenades again

P90BLK 3D Printed .300 Blackout bullpup. Uses a BRN-180 bolt and is left eject only as the guy behind it couldn't figure out how to make a properly ejecting model. Feeds from P90 style mags

There's a guy on Arfcom making his own beloved upper to cope with the death of his father. Thread is full of concepts for custom lengthened receivers shops other stuff
Some new details and an image gallery
-23% more bolt travel allowing for constant recoil
-FRT/Super Safety compatible
-Uses standard AR barrels and handguards
-Top cover latch is an AR mag release button
-.308 Version is planned
-Initial version will have non Quick change barrel but a version that does have QC is planned, possible to swap some parts on a non QC upper to make it QC
-No dual feed
-right side, reciprocating charging handle
-Proprietary bolt carrier
-Significantly less expensive than an MCR or even Fightlite's "cheap" RAPTR belt fed.

I'm putting my bet on poor service from Taurus. As far as I know since Taurus acquired Rossi they still have separate production lines, but their repairs all go to the same place. Having to deal with this shit was so annoying I just got rid of the gun after I managed to fix it myself cause I didn't want to ever be beholden to their black call center employees again. I was stupid enough to buy one of their lever action rifles that was a clone of the Marlin 30-30 which ran fairly well all things considered except that you couldn't load more rounds into the rifle after you chambered a round for some reason. Like, you had to be completely empty in the chamber to load rounds into the magazine tube, and I still don't get it.

My real issue came when I was cleaning it after a day of shooting. I pressed on the kingsgate to check the chamber and it just shattered. One of the most integral and highest wear parts of the rifle shattered after my first time taking it out. So of course I was fucked and the gun was essentially non-functional now. So I called Rossi and even though I was under warranty the repair would not be free as it only covers defects. Which, y'know, a faulty kingsgate sounds like a pretty fucking bad defect to me, but what do I know?

So after I went back and forth with the sheboon for a while, I just asked them if they could send me a new kingsgate and I would just fix it myself but they said they couldn't do that because it was a 'restricted part'. Instead they wanted me to pay $60 to send the gun to them, and a further $90 rebenching fee. So I said fuck that and decided to gamble on lever action kingsgates that I found online that were reported not to fit my gun but ended up fitting and working anyway. My honest recommendation would be for no one to bother with Rossi or Taurus designs that are rumored to have problems, even if they're really cool, cause they're just going to try and fleece you for repairs. I can't 100% confirm that Taurus and Rossi repairs are handled by the same group but that appears to be the general consensus on it.

All who wander lost in the mist, unable to decide which gun to get for their first gun will eventually come to know the truth.
CZ-75 and all of it's clones (especially the Jericho) is the way, the truth, and the light.
Do you want something small that can be easily concealed? There is a CZ for that.
Do you want a full size handgun in all steel that can fire the hottest rounds available for any caliber without breaking the gun or your wrist? There is a CZ for that.
Do you want a plastic gun that works with an endless stream of magazines from several different designs, and has parts compatibility on par with a Glock?
Buddy, you'll be surprised. But there is a CZ for that.

The CZ75 is overrated, especially the SP-01.

Buy HK instead.
I have had the most dissapointing experiences with HK's despite everyones praise of the brand.
They're duty-tier pistols with a Jewish-tier markup for civilians. the only guns from HK I'm interested in are their older, experimental pistols. Otherwise I just dont get it.

all plastic wonder nines are duty tier in fit and finish, even the stupidly expensive ones. its why i've left them behind. just don't grab my interest at all.

Thanks for all the replies. Honestly considering it's gonna be my first gun I'm basically set on the Beretta 92FS. Meets all of my needs except being small enough for easy CCW. I'll probably get a 1911 and maybe a Sig P365 (for carry) eventually.
Anyways, scheduled the mandatory live fire training course, after that the application takes about 3 months, so we'll see.

They make smaller ones. The fullsize 15/17 round mags will work in them, too, sticking out of the bottom, of course.

Well, it's not as utilitarian as a Glock, but the 92FS is a classic, fine pistol. I own a ghost'ed out 92FS Inox, mostly for the vibes. One of the extremely few guns I own "just for fun."
