The only Blackhawk thing I'll vouch for is their basic bitch web sling because its nigh impossible to fuck up a canvas sling. Having used both 5.11 and Blackhawk in duty capacities I would never recommend them because their shit doesn't hold up to long term abuse in my personal experience. I know 5.11 is in balls deep with a lot of LE agencies but that doesn't really make them worth a shit.

On the flip side, I've had a pair of Bates tactical boots last forever and their reputation has been kind of ass for the past decade since they're all foreign made now.

A lot of these, if not most them do because they're designed for duty use and so you don't have to fuck with belt keepers (lol we all still have to wear belt keeper). The idea is quick don and doff for conveniences sake. My old war belt has the inner belt velcro'd in and the outer belt is basically MOLLE hip padding.
Ha. I've been daily driving a pair of Bates "trail" boots.for like two years. Bought them for $30 and the fuckers just won't die.

So I decided to buy a 12" Atlas R-One handguard during Aero's black Friday sale as a replacement for the 12" S-One on my 11" pistol build so I could mount the switch for my light on top of the rail as God intended. Since I now had an unused 12" S-One, I picked up a 16" Faxon Gunner barrel with pinned gas block, an Aero upper and a Faxon BCG for cheap from AIMSurplus and will have another complete upper laying around shortly.

Advice: sell your AR parts as you replace them or they become new rifles.

Anybody have some good resources on learning about all this gear queer stuff?
The /gq/ general on 4chan's /k/ including their beginner guides, The Youtube Channel "Garand Thumb"
I want to get a decent set of body armor, plate carriers, and associated equipment.
Before you purchase anything, you must determine just what exactly you want. Do you want to conceal your body armor under a jacket or hoodie, do you want to be able to carry 12 magazines on your Plate Carrier? Does the ability to quickly remove your Plate Carrier matter? Does it matter if your gear glows in the dark in the Infared spectrum (albeit this is only an issue with chinese made gear so largely disregard it except in the case of the Ferro Concepts Bison Belt) Do you only want front and back plates or do you also want side plates? Do you want the ability to zip on and zip off overprices little tactical backpacks that are specially designed to hold the 12 flashbangs that you don't own that are meant to be handed to you by the friends you don't have?
As for actual brands I can recommend the following (Note I am but an Internet Sperg and not a high speed cool guy)
Armor
-Hesco
-RMA (Some at the very least 1st Gen RMA plates have a foam "cheat ring" meaning they do not offer full
protection across their entire width and height)
NOTE: STEEL IS NOT ARMOR, Steel is for targets, not body armor. Don't buy steel "armor" no matter how much the whore guntubers shill it
When buying body armor one must determine what level of protection one desires, whether it be NIJ Level III, NIJ Special threat (sometimes called NIJ Level III+) or NIJ Level IV
Plate Carrier
There are two main types of Plate Carrier, Covert and Overt. The former is all the rage these days especially when run "slick"
For Covert Carriers the only ones I have ever heard universally praised are the Ferro Concepts Slickster and T-rex Arms AC-1, I've also heard the Defense Mechanisms MEPC is pretty good but I've heard allegations they aren't US made and I think it's a relatively new product on the market)
For Overt carriers, I'm kind of blanking on those but anything by Crye, First Spear or any other big company should do you just fine (If you're willing to spend the new Haley Strategic Thorax looks pretty cool)
You'll have to specify a bit more about "associated equipment

I don't know anyone who carries a gun for a living that actually carries Ferro Concepts or Trex gear. That's gamer gun hipster shit. Haley is good gear though.

An aside, I know it's getting colder but I just want to say, if you're going to carry while wearing gloves; practice practice practice. It really is a completely different feel and can seriously fuck you up if you're not used to it.

Also avoid cool guy gloves unless you want to shout that you're carrying. I wear Oakley's at work but only at work.

I'm a mostly history collector and I know some active shit so I can run guns hard if I need to defend my self, but otherwise I want to fuck around with old shit.

Shit comes and goes and each varries, I fucking hate 5.11 pants. Maybe if all you do is LARP with an AR it's fine but I'll take my 20 dollar wal mart Wranglers over them. Oakley gloves are fucking trash (and I'm a die hard on their eye ware) I run mechanix.

Sadly, either ask someone you trust on each thing, or bite down and buy and see if it's any good.

Since mentioned blackhawk, holsters are always worth money, granted I'm pretty aware what quality is and I carry daily, but I got a decent Galco, that fits my G20 and it hides well under my suit I use an Uncle Mikes for SOB and often I legit mexicarry when I'm doing my day to day shopping or social shit. My 1903 just pocket it. So I'm not very snobby when it comes to how to carry or what it is.
Yeah a lot of the 5.11 and other tacticool brands smell of marketing. The geardos do shill a lot, but yeah I'd avoid AR500Armor.com if nothing else. I dunno if their carriers are any good but I have heard stories about their customer service. Not good ones either.

Their shit is rebranded Condor last i heard.

I do have a Condor carrier I got just to practice spray painting camo on but it's not terrible. At least I didn't give AR500 money.

Also, their "militia" helmet is a joke.

Yeah I know it's Plebbit but for once I agree with them.
Condor carriers are fine for airsoft but that's about it.

Yea, people were calling out those AR500 helmets from the start. Would have to be suicidal to wear that thing.

Yeah you see a lot of that stuff on eBay, the one I got I just did because of a deep discount. It's not bad for the money but I'd rather get something a little more robust and comfortable.

And the helmet... just look at the thing.

You'd be better off with a WWII German Stahlhelm or 1970s Soviet infantry helmet. For real.

My only possessions of gear queerness are from Condor. Yes, I know that's airsoft shit, but I'm stingy and don't walk around with a plate carrier like an autist. It's for emergencies only, and all my local milsurp store had.

Speaking of plates, would Hesco L210 Special Threat be a decent option for some city slickers who have to commute to a bad part of town? Not quite for covert wear, but something to throw on in the car that won't attract too much attention. Threat profile is typical hood rats carrying mostly pistol calibers, but don't want to exclude possibility of rifles. IIIA seems too light, IV is overkill.

I may be misinformed but I have heard some grumblings which may or may not be correct that L210's might not defeat every threat listed in the special threat category, what threat(s) this would be I have no Idea and to reiterate I do not remember where I heard this information so I cannot speak to it's authenticity. But generally I have heard that it is a good plate and in the ghetto you are much more likely to encounter rifle caliber pistols with 5.5-12.5in barrels chambered in 7.62x39 and 5.56x45 than full size rifles in those same calibers.
