the M16A1 is about 6-1/2lbs, the G36A1 is closer to 7-1/2 lbs, which is lighter than the M16A2's 8-1/4lbs. the glass fiber reinforced high density polymer receiver of the G36 is pretty durable. the barrel in both rifles, once the breech is locked, contains pressure enough that the receiver doesn't need much strength except where the barrel meets the receiver (or where the stock meets the receiver).M16A1 is heavier than the G36A1
my G36A1 has the export 1.5x optic, not the larger dual-optic carry handle (it's an export 2nd gen G36E technically, closer to the modern G36V in configuration).
a lot of these rifles will vary wildly if you stick on enough RIS/RAS and accessories. i'm assuming you're talking about the basic rifle itself though, and not any accessories like flashlights, or whatever.
