Alright gentlemen, I have an oddball question for you all:

What would be the best/most practical way to get a decent nightvision/thermal setup with a gasmask? Admittedly my knowledge of this sort of niche within a niche is limited, but the optics would almost have to be weapon mounted wouldn't they? I don't recall something like the MOPP system being helmet mounted optics capable.

This is more of a theory crafting question than anything, it's just that I really don't know where to be looking for more information on this one.

Weapon mounted 100%. Helmet mounted NVGs while wearing a mask is just not practical.

We can only hope.

I'd normally say "fuck em" but honestly if the Supreme court doesn't step up for this shit I'm concerned they won't step up against other states trying it or even federal-level bullshit.

Lawsuits are gearing up.

Adam Winkler, one of UCLA's graboid shills, says “It’s going to be awhile before this law goes into effect, if it ever does.”

A handful of rural sheriffs are also refusing to enforce it.
 
Okay, on a lighter note since lawsuits take forever.
I want to know if anyone is shooting "long" range here in 5.56. I've been trying to get better at hitting moving targets at ~400+ yards with my most preferred rifle (16") and the most common ammo (55gr 5.56) in an iron sights configuration. Previously I just tried to hit stationary targets up to 300 yards while clearing a course but I felt like I ought to get better range wise, the area I live in has long lines of sights.
Just curious as to if anyone can hit without using an optic/better ammo/barrel length.

I can hit a stationary man size target at 500yds with a 14.5 in barrel. It’s not easy and adding a scope in the 3-6x range helps immensely.

Look at the Marine Corps fundamentals of shooting. They may be a cult, but every recruit has to be able to hit a man size target at 500yds. They have a good way of explaining the fundamentals to idiots.

Other things to look at. Don’t worry about a 6-12 in circle target. The target the USMC uses at 500yds is 20”x40” of black. Any hit in the black is good.



Other things to be aware of at ranges longer then 300yds is wind drift will come into play especially with a light 55-62gr bullet like 5.56. Learn to read the wind.

Oh hey, the every Marine is a rifleman myth rears it's ugly head again.
 
Planning on building a proper, legal SBR (thinking of 14.5 length) but does anyone have any advice on the way to go on it? I could go with individual but I do live with my SO so I was thinking trust just to avoid any potentially legal grey areas associated with accessibility. I don't want to go with brace since I'm planning on painting the receiver and I don't want to fuck it up when I have to engrave. just not sure how much of a hassle it is to setup the trust.

trusts are legal entities in their own right for the purposes of property management. you pay a lawyer and notary to draw up the paperwork for the trustees (yourself and your SO presumably) and property that is held in trust can be accessed and controlled by members of the trust. this also works for houses, boats, companies (holding companies are sort of different but similar in concept), et c.

for firearms, because the title ii item is registered to an individual, an individual must exercise control over it at all times - specifically access control. if you ensure the titled ii item is under your control, or your access control (reasonably secure storage), then a trust isn't needed, however your SO cannot legally access/control/possess the item without your explicit presence (this is why there's no harm in loaning your SBR to your friend to fire off a magazine at the range when you're standing next to him, but you cannot hand it over to him to go off by himself for 5 minutes to walk it from the car to the bench).

from my perspective as a dealer, when i accept for transfer an NFA controlled item that is going to a trust, the paperwork is identical to that of a person, but i put in the trust information instead and have a separate entry for the trustee that actually accepted the transfer, paid the fees, and signed the paperwork on behalf of the trust. note that a trustee (or listed responsible person) must still undergo the standard background check (rule 41F) like anyone else, and with multiple trustees, each member of the trust must be checked individually.

i like to think i'm fairly competent at minute-of-man shooting out to 600ish meters with the typical A2 target sights, however individual abilities, your environment, your target, and your ammunition and rifle will ultimate determine your success. if you're keen on long range 5.56 for benchrest shooing, consider a bull barrel with 77gr SMK at around 2750 fps with IMR 4350 or something like that. Black Hill OTM is a handy off-the-shelf product that will do the business if you do your part and you have controls on your environment and target for consistency.

if you're talking combat effectiveness, if you're hitting 8" pie plates at 200 meters with open sights, you're perfectly fine as-is. USMC quals on reduced size targets at 36 meters typically and while nearly all Marines have to qualify, the fundamentals are really what you should get good with on trigger control, breathing/respiratory pause during the squeeze, the follow through, sight alignment and sight picture, understanding how to make adjustments, et c.

magnifiers help the shooter ID the target and ones with a calibrated ballistic drop calculator can range a target to establish reasonable hits, however the optic does nothing for the actual shooting because the optic is not affecting the ammunition, environment, rifle, or target. it's purely an aid to the shooter's eye. some people do worse when shooting with an optic because they focus on having technology/gadgets "doing the work" instead of functioning as convenient tools.

This is maybe just me, but a 14.5" barrel isn't worth doing a stamp. Just do a 16", pin and weld or get one of those Faxon 14.5s with the integrated barrel diameter muzzle devices imo.
