Why can't these ammo companies ever seem to be doing badly, going out of biz, consolidating, or whatever. Shouldn't this be a big cash cow type market?

Czech IT Company Gobbles Up US Ammo Manufacturers - Remington, Federal, CCI and Others Being Sold Off

A better question is, why are the Czechs buying up so much of the US small arms industry? CZ bought Colt a while ago.

Vista probably started shopping the division when they/NGIS lost the LCAAP contract to Olin, and the market started stabilizing.

I don't know much about mouse guns, but I'm considering getting a compact piece for pocket carry/backup to my CCW. Is .32acp a capable defense round?

I would go with a Ruger LCP II in 380 before 32. 380 is already kind of iffy for self defense and a 380 almost has twice the muzzle energy of a 32. If your looking at a Keltec P32, it is just slightly smaller than a LCP II. The LCP II is almost too small in my hands as I can barely put two fingers on the grip with the little mag extension.

You will also easily find ammo for a 380 and it will be cheaper, don't see 32 on the shelves very often.

The LCP II is slightly larger than the first gen LCP

Crossposted from the Ukraine thread:
Unedited & translated 3rd Brigade assault on Wagner positions earlier this year; puckering stuff.
At one point (5:20) a Ukrainian's AK pops the receiver cover off when he launches an underbarrel grenade.
But hey, cover-mounted AK optics are fine.....

.32ACP is pretty hard to find, anemic compared to .380 (which itself is only barely adequate), and really the only reason it still exists is to feed vintage pistols like Grandma's purse pistol, old milsurps, caliber-restricted origin/weird euro mouse-guns, etc. But if you do obtain one & like carrying it, and/or have no other options, by all means. World War 1/2 private-purchase officer's guns & Depression-era vest pistols are still cool as fuck; I just wouldn't want to carry an heirloom or something that can't be replaced easily. Sure, there are still new pistols being made in .32ACP, but also in .380ACP with the exact same form factor.

However, as for other .32 cartridges; H&R Magnum is a completely different story, if you like wheelguns & oddball production calibers.

I liked the Kel-Tek P32 enough that I acquired 2 of them.
It's slightly smaller, easier to shoot, holds one more round, and locks open on the last shot.
If I ever had to ackually use it I would just keep firing to slide lock.
Remember, all handguns are a compromise.

The amount of Kiwis shitting on .32 makes me a sad Kiwi. They're just the right balance between power and concealability for me.

yes and no. yes in that it'll reliably fire in most quality firearms and can kill men when called upon to perform. no in that it's a bit expensive these days, it has trouble actually stopping a determined attacker, and there are significantly better options available.

that being said, a Colt 1903, Beretta 1935, or CZ 70 have served as somewhat compact/slim backup pistols for over a century and work as intended. if you prefer to use a .32 ACP, i recommend sticking to 73gr semi-wadcutter above 1100 feet/sec (or near it) in a 4 inch barrel. you will have difficulty with consistent performance from hollow points, and ball ammunition will tend to tumble, which is nice, but often is anemic to actually stopping people with mal intent.

consider that modern 100gr lead wadcutters from a .380 ACP (or 9mm short) or equivalent (such as the 9mm Makarov) serve as police handguns in many countries, and question if .32 ACP is right for your situation. in small handguns it can be "snappy" though and are more "minute of man" and "across the room" pistols than anything else.

In my experience the only type of .32 I trust is European made fmj.
It tends to be loaded hotter and feeds way more reliable than anything with a truncated nose.
They also seem to fill the length of the magazine and not jostle around under recoil.
This reduces the possibility of rim lock (.32 is semi rimmed remember)
I don't have faith that there is enough huspa to reliably expand a jhp so I go for penetration with fmj.
My experience comes from owning/shooting
Kel-Tek P32
Beretta 81 "cheetah"
Savage 1907

guys i can't stop dreaming of being a cowboy and i think i'm going to buy a henry .22 mare's leg in a couple weeks. i want one in .357 but the price spikes up to over a thousand and i don't like that
If you look, you can probably find an 1887 Mare's Leg in 12 gauge for under a grand. Won't be as cheap to feed, but goddamn if you won't feel like a cowboy making plinking targets disappear in a fine mist.

Ammo is a very boom and bust industry. The 2 major US owned companies left, Winchester and Hornady have a 2 major advantages. Winchester’s parent company is a chemical company that makes chemical feedstocks and epoxy resins. This evens out the ups and downs. Hornady is a privately owned company and as such does not have justify its earnings to a board.

Does Winchester make decent Pump-Actions? A local paw shop has one in mint condition for a decent price
Yeah, the old gallery gun Model 1906, there's a take down version too. Very sweet little plinkers, can shoot everything from .22 short CB, shotshell, and .22LR stingers, including a mix of the above. I had one until it was stolen.
no, it doesn't have to be. i don't know much about lever actions, i just know a mare's leg is haunting my desires
The Rossi Ranch Hand is allegedly decent, it comes in .38/.357, along with .45 Colt and .44 Mag.
I have experience with their standard lever-gun in .38, and have no complaints other than the stock being pretty plain & not completely flush with the tang & receiver. No gap, it just stands proud a tiny bit.
