If you are that desperate for saltpeter, try the piss jug method. The other ingredients are not difficult to get, just plain sulfur and charcoal.
There's a part in the book Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy where a group of Injun killers runs out of powder while being pursued by a whole tribe. They procure all the ingredients, except the saltpeter, and start getting to work pissing on the pile while kneading it. They dry it for a few hours and then get to work shooting the stuff just as they're being set upon by the natives. I'd heard of straw piss bed niter generation before but I didn't think that you could directly apply the urine to the black powder mix. Probably just a bit of creative liberties being taken. From my looking into the subject it always seemed like a months long endeavor requiring a lot of piss and preferably a dedicated spot in the yard.

also wanted to add: the new Mossberg 590S has a bunch of improvements and the longer tab on the lifter combined with a more forgiving timing should allow reliably mini shell use. the red circled part is the key here along with a bumper at the front of the bolt plate that holds the mini shell stable on the lifter without interfering with normal shells (which will compress the bumper rather than sit on it).

i have an "evidence locker special" Stevens 320 gen 1 that's rough for wear but mechanically fine. from inspection it seems like mini shells would work too since it's very similar to an Ithaca 37 action with some cost reductions, so in theory it should also work with mini shells without much trouble although i would bet that you would have to stick with the federal mini shell that's a little longer than the aguila ones.

with these nonstandard munitions it's probably best to not use them outside of what they're designed for, i probably would stick with a breech loaded shotgun since both aguila and federal mini shells used that action as a test shotgun. but if you want a pump, the 590S, Winchester 1200 and 1300, BPS, and Ithaca 37 seem to work pretty good with them, in descending order.

I would like to throw a real grenade someday. I’m aware of places in the Western US that lets anyone use big guns for a fee. What about grenades? Thank you.
Knob Creek used to and there are a few people i know that sometimes allow people they trust to do so (these people are not in the business of "renting" grenades to people to throw, it's more of a "new-old-stock" situation). otherwise since no insurance company is willing to insure economically, volume would be too low to sustain, and local authorities might prohibit the activity on their business license, i know of no regular businesses that would allow it. Knob Creek was the exception and even they stopped doing it.

just take a vacation to Vietnam or something, it's a normal tourist thing over there.

There is work being done to create a DIYable version of the now out of production Full Conceal folding Glock. Full Conceal went out of business and its patents were bought up by a patent hoarding company, so it is unlikely it will ever be produced again

Dev Desert3D has come up with a design for a "sandwich" multipart Glock frame. Speculation is wild in regards to potential benefits of the design with discussion largely revolving around multi material construction and easy insertion of reinforcements. The main materials of interest for specific pieces are aluminum, steel and carbon fiber.

Duke Nukem's Shotgun.jpg

The previously mentioned Winchester 1300, the screen used shotgun for Duke Nukem 3D. Stockless isn't great, but this setup is iconic and I'd like it just for kicks.

US 8 inch guns in a treeline. REFORGER 86 i think
86.jpg

These guns were capable of firing the M422 nuclear shell with a yield up to 10 kilotons. 2000 of these shells were built and distributed to units and they were retired along with the M110 gun in 1992. when in the field unauthorized use was prevented by a combination lock.

and a nice cheap hunting shotty.
Check around for older, used Remington 870s. There's a fuck ton of those floating around and they live up to the hype. The older ones, like from 60s-80s. Don't waste time with the 870 Express. If you can, spend a bit more and shop for an older Wingmaster. If you do get an 870 I recommend Vang Comp followers and safeties as worthwhile aftermarket upgrades.

Things that will I bet surprise you about actual grenades: no way in hell you're pulling the pin with your teeth and the explosion is nothing like the movies/TV.
just take a vacation to Vietnam or something, it's a normal tourist thing over there.
Why they gotta be so extra? They couldn't just run normal tourist attractions like restaurants and prostitutes?

I've heard a few stories of people chipping their teeth attempting that.

I admire them for going the less conventional route.

I'll look into them. I've discussed it here before, but I have a list of shotguns I'm willing to buy already. I just like the look of the wood on this mossberg 500 honestly. But I'll look out for a good 870 if it's cheap.

Edit: this is the Mossberg 500 I'm talking about, the model 50120

5+1 for 3 inch shells. I just like it man.

Speaking of shotguns, what is the consensus on the Alofs device here?
All this talk of shotguns reminded me of my friends Alofs device fitted single shot and how fun it was to shoot.
Unfortunately, when we switched to the 3" magnums he had just bought, the device jammed.
He later found that the 3" shell was just a little too big for the Alofs device.

Nothing stopping you from getting a mag tube extension. You could take it up to 8 if you so desired (the beauty of Mossy 500s and Remmy 870s is the aftermarket parts selection is huge). I've used both, and really it's a matter of taste between them.

(That wood furniture IS gorgeous though!)

I looked into that actually, totally possible getting 8 rounds, they sell kits. It'd be a fun project gun for relatively cheap all things considered. And I love a good project.

its neat for what it is.

just finished the first of my 9.3x57mm loads.
I formed the cases by necking up 8mm mauser brass. you can also neck up .30-06 brass ass well. 286gr cast and coated bullets.
here they are compared to a nickle plated .30-06:

I've got a Mossberg set up like that except for the heat shield. It's pretty damn fun to run.

There's a reason they stopped making this design 100 years ago. Having it made by Turks rather than the pedantic Germans isn't doing it any favors in terms of reliability. Just get a pump action or save up for a semi auto Beretta or Benelli.

Aw sucks you're sick man. But I'm glad you've taken the J frame pill, and a pretty snazzy stainless steel one at that. Tell me how 357 feels!

Yet another reason for me to get a 10/22 once I get a shotgun- this Mossberg 500 is calling my name rn, beautiful wood, 28 inch barrel, etc. Hopefully I'll get both this year, a nice 22 repeater in wood, and a nice cheap hunting shotty.
Can do. All my revolvers wilbe stainless if I can help it. Cleaning blued revolvers is a gigantic PITA

As for the 10/22, I'd suggest the stainless and synthetic model then get a lovely aftermarket wood stock for it.

Mossberg 500, of you want wood they have a sku that's the 18.5 inch barrel and the 26 inch barrel together. I got it and it's so damn nice to have both barrels.

Now, I just need Ruger to MAKE MORE Stainless FLATTOP .357/9mm convertible Blackhawks (upc 7-36676-05245-5)

They're allegedly made in tiny batches so they vanished in less than 72 hours every year.
