Yeah there's nothing wrong with G3s, I just prefer FALs over them. But to be honest I have a half dozen 308 rifles sitting in the safe collecting dust, they're just too expensive to shoot and not practical firearms for self defense. Not going to shit on the FAL or the AR 10, the PTR cost half of what the Daniel Defense AR10 cost and had $5 mags when I bought it. Also I like my Ak74 [5.45mm], but it never gets compared to other guns for reasons.
I'm going to anger a lot of people by saying this, but hear me out.
Rifles for most people in most circumstances are a cope. They're useful to have in the home, but the vast vast majority of your firearms training should be with whatever pistol you carry.
Most people can't bring their rifle with them to work, or in the bank, or in the grocery store, or in the gas station. You can with a pistol. The vast majority of self defense shootings occur outside the home with a pistol. You're most likely to encounter violent strangers when you're out and about. If you want to develop the skills needed to adequately defend yourself, developing your pistol abilities is of the utmost importance.
I've spent tens of thousands of dollars on guns and ammo over years and years of shooting. This is the philosophy that I've developed which I tell to new shooters and practice myself.
The absolute most important and useful gun you will ever own is the pistol you carry. Get a pistol that's small enough to carry 365 days a year, but big enough to comfortably fire 1000 rounds in a single session. Once you've found this pistol, buy as much ammo for it as you can possibly afford, and shoot it as much as you can physically make time for.
