WAS is quality. I have a few things from them, everything is well put together. Their Covert Carrier is a very good alternative to the Slickster.

How about some of the older semi-auto Berettas? A303 can be found pretty cheap.
 
Looking into .45 Super/.450 SMC since the idea of a nightstand gun I can turn into a woods gun with the change of a magazine is appealing.

I have little interest in the HK USP due to the proprietary rail and awful mag release.

Does anyone know if the HK45 can safely fire an extremely small diet of it?

I'm fairly sure the HK45 is GTG with as much .45 Super as you can afford to feed it, like the USP.
You only get 10 rnd mags with the HK45 tho.

They're not bad, but they don't do anything the HK45C doesn't do in a slightly smaller package.
I only got mine because it was a screaming deal on a factory OD green one. ($750 otd, iirc).

speaking professionally, there isn't any known .45 ACP (or related) load that the HK45, USP, or MARK 23 isn't compatible with. the HK45 (just like the USP-C) will have a slightly higher duty cycle for the recoil spring (test and possibly replace at 15k instead of 30k rounds). to put it in perspective, the HK45 is rated for unlimited 200gr +p ammunition.

personally i would recommend the 18lb recoil spring (https://www.gunsprings.com/index.cfm?page=items&cID=1&mID=26). the standard full size recoil spring weight is 14lb.

Get a set of multicurve plates off the NIJ list and two seperate carriers, something like a ferro slickster for concealed wear and a crye JPC for the SHTF ones. If you're cool with sketchy "tested to the standards of" plates, ball out and get you the safelife FRAS armor.

You know they make 1913 rail adapters for the USP/Mark 23 proprietary rails, right? It would mean having a custom holster molded since it won't fit in any off the shelf holster with the adapter and light, but there are options out there. And as far as I know, the HK45 pistols have the same lever style mag release as the USP and Mark 23, which is probably my favorite mag release on any pistol. I like being able to use the tip of my trigger finger to drop the mag instead of my thumb and having to shift my grip. But, yes, as far as I know any .45 ACP H&K pistol (aside from the P9) can eat as much .45 Super as you want to feed it. Yet one more reason why H&Ks are the finest polymer framed pistols ever made.

No experience, but swapping from polymer to steel while keeping the polymer mag release seems like a bad idea on principle. If you desire the extra rounds in the mag(which would be tempting wont lie) then you'll have to experiment with three magazines and their steel mag release, burn through a few hundred rounds for function/reliability testing. I would absolutely run it until it's thoroughly worn in or discard it if it has consistent poor performance.
I prefer not to rely on reviews of others when changing a crucial part like that for a carry piece, since every gun has its own "personality".

Gen 1 and gen 3s are good. But you'd be better off getting the PSA micro dagger mags so you won't have to swap out your mag catch. The Shield Arms mags will chew up your plastic glock mag catch. And if you put a metal catch in the gun, it will chew up your plastic glock mags. The PSA mags have a plastic insert along the front, but they're a little bit finicky, and you may or may not have to do a little bit of filling to make them smooth
