Today is Mrs. Balls birthday. Asked what she wanted to do. So on the agenda is
1.) Go out and overspend on ammo, and shoot all our guns.
2.) Get some mexican food.
3.) Get drunk as skunks.
4.) Wind down the night watching old Alex Jones stuff.

I knew I made the right call with the ring, boys.

I know, turbo gay. Mostly she wants to sight in her 300blk and get some more practice with the cheetah. But she also wants to shoot all my guns she hasn't gotten to yet. So I'm bringing everything. I'll report back how her tiny ass handles hot 12GA slugs.

Andersons are generally considered to be the cheapest ARs that aren’t shit-tier. That AM-15 will end up costing around the same as a budget PSA rifle with a few advantages.
  • Free-floated barrel. Most PSAs in the same price tier will be a front sight base upper. As far as budget ARs go the stuff about free float accuracy vs FSB is irrelevant at this price point so it’s up to your preference.
  • MLOK handguard for easier accessory mounting
  • Magpul grip and stock compared to basic M4 furniture
The question of quality control in budget ARs has been beaten to death in this thread at this point so I won’t comment on it.

Using a SVT for hunting is lunacy. It wasn't a particularly reliable gun when it was new, and 80+ years haven't improved its performance one bit. If you want to hunt with a 54r, simply buy a Tigr or something. The Soviets themselves retired the SVT as fast as they could after WW2, maybe there was a reason.

If you want to hunt with slavshit there are options (Saiga in .308, Chinese stuff, the aforementioned Tigr). Maybe not in the States and not for cheap, but for sure better than a gun that will jam every four rounds or so. A Garand is a better platform despite the lack of mags, and this comes from a guy that loves Tokarevs and owned three of 'em.

The Garand is simply better built, great quality control and excellent reliability. It is how it is.

This is dumb. Hunting weapons don't have to be military-tier reliable. You're not putting thousands upon thousands of rounds through it. You're probably not even putting hundreds of rounds through it. Muzzle loader hunters would consider it a lot to put even a dozen rounds through their rifles yearly. If his SVT can get through a magazine, and is accurate enough to make a humane hit on an animal, there's nothing wrong with using it for hunting. Hell Eric from Iraq Vetran 1488 has a video of himself using a 170 year old Kammerladder to take a deer. I've taken white tail with my FAL. You don't need the most insane Gucci gear to harvest an animal.

The SVT40 is a fun rifle to shoot, and it certainly turns heads at the range, but I would not recommend it for hunting. It's nearly 50 inches long, which is pretty unwieldy if you have to deal with any trees or brush. Compare that to the Winchester 30-30 or a Remington 700 which are both about 40 inches. There's also no way to mount an optic on them, without spending an additional grand or more on one of the very rare scope mounts from the early 40s.

7.62x54r ammo is also difficult to locate these days, and hunting rounds even more so. My SVT runs very reliably with no stoppages in the four or five hundred rounds after I adjusted the gas, but that's a sample size of 1 rifle, so I can't speak to the reliability of all of them.

If you really want a semi-auto rifle with a full power cartridge for hunting, I'd recommend getting an M1A, or a AR-10 style rifle (if your state allows it for hunting)

True, there are many dedicated semi-auto hunting rifles that don't break the bank. I should have specified that my suggestions were for someone wanting a military style rifle for hunting, since the earlier post was asking about hunting with a Soviet battle rifle.

AR-10s are the best hunting rifles out there. There is an enormous amount of aftermarket parts available because every lower part except for the magazine and the takedown pins is shared with the AR-15. The barrel will come threaded so it's easy to use a brake or suppressor. The magazines are cheap and readily available and the controls are ergonomic. If legal, there is no reason not to use one unless you want a specific look, are using a weird caliber, or desperately need to hit the gym.

Best by what metrics? If you're talking just semis then they're going to be a top option because of all the options, but there are plenty of other rifles I'd rather hunt with. A semi doesn't even make the list for hunting suppressed for me.

Semis are better than bolts in every way except for weight, difficulty using exotic ammo (e.g. extra long bullets or extremely powerful cartridges), and lock time. The latter two are irrelevant for most hunting and the former isn't a big deal if you're at all fit.

I see you didn't mention price. Why pay $1k for a basic AR-10 when you can harvest with any number of ~$500 bolties in .308 if you're just looking to hunt?
