Thats the plan. All the fun of the handle while still having a bit of picatanni if I want it. Best of both. Really though I'll be happy as long as it's that classic 80's blaster. It's very comfortable and light from what I've handled of it.

Just mega cringe.

Either get the right and proper fixed carry handle if you want to retro larp. Or get a regular modern AR with a flat top.

The only reason or get a fixed handle is for an A1 clone / A1 derivative

always really loved the look of the carry handle AR. gives it so much more character than the flat tops. i also really liked the look of the scopes mounted on the carry handles. it gives the gun so much more character and just plain looks cool.

luckily it has died down with the trend of retro ARs, but at one point the trend was every AR had to more to the 'tacticool' look, as if everyone who just takes their rifle to the range needs to have some delta force kicking in doors style of rifle. i recall years before the retro AR became a popular thing that people thought i was stupid for saying i like the older style of AR. the thing is, if im just shooting paper, i dont need a quad rail with lights, laser, quick detach red dot on flat top rail, etc. just let me have a cool, fun gun to shoot.

you arnt delta force kicking in doors, you are a jackass on the range who struggles to keep all rounds on paper. quit larping as anything diffrent.

I mean it still has everything a AR needs. It can take 30 round mags, you got your sights, you even got a bayonet lug for spear mode. I don't need a space gun. I need a AR that shoots bullets down range. If I want a quad rail monster with gold ceracote finish I'll buy that. But nothing is wrong with a classic that is proven to work.

I asked a Canadian for some suggestions. After 15 minutes of kvetching about their situation the answer was:

For 5.56 get a Tavor or a Type 97, and for 7.62x39 get an SKS or a Type 81. Avoid any locally sourced AR-180 variants as they're all horrible shit.

Chinese surplus 7.62x39 is cheap af there, like $500 CAD for a crate of 1440 rounds. Sounds like you can get it anywhere.

Edit: Man, look at all those crates... Even got Chinese surplus 5.56 SS109 on the second page there.

Ive been in lever arms. Lots of neat stuff in there, not really set up for browsing though.

Thanks for the advice, I think I may be too tempted by the engineering of the chinaman and so may commit to the 762 side of the coming world war.

Can't go wrong with an SKS and dirt cheap surplus ammo. Type 81 seems kinda pricy for what it is.

Blood Diamond builds were a thing even among police circles. can't even tell you how many wanted either that or BHD. very weird feeling being asked to make clone rifles of stuff i used in the 90's lol.

Justin's A1 carry handle is the normal size for the hand, but maintains the same height over bore as the A2. has a good look to it.

there's also the Armalite carry handle from their M15 line, product number E20149, if you can find it.

Looking more into what options Canadians have, looks like it's not all bad for 5.56. Can get a Bren 2 but they're ungodly expensive. The Benelli MR1 and the HK SL8 are available too. Seeing some G36 rifles but those seem to be SL8 conversions.

SL8 may be interesting for a DMR type build, can throw a STANAG magwell on it.

Come on Canada bro, you know you want it. You'll have leftover money for ammo and cocaine. Pretty sure it's actually 5.56mm rather than .223, unless they make a special version for Canada with a .223 chamber.

Plus, the BEST part is that AR lower can host dozens of uppers 😀

I'd get the type 97 if i were you. Uses AR mags, is chinky, will make (certain) Americans jealous that they can't have one. Also you have to have a long barrel on your semi auto rifles. So a bullpup will still be relatively compact even with the longer barrel. Get the type 97 that has the 1913 rail on top, not the carry handle.

Type 97 has a vibe to it but the gun alone costs more than an SKS and a crate of cheap ammo. Would make a good 2nd or 3rd gun though. And the usual concerns are parts availability and reliability. I hear it's picky with mags.
