Same here...mostly. I do like the Valmet M71 and the Sa vz. 58 (with modern furniture). That last one gets me some eye rolls from my friends who are AK fans but I don't care. Anymore, I'm surprised people still like the AKs as much as they do given how ammo, rifles, and accessories are no longer far cheaper than ARs or other semi-auto rifles. This is just my opinion, of course, as we all know 7.62 and 5.45 kill just fine, but at their current CPR, I'd argue it's better to opt for .300BLK or 5.56, and at that point, the AK seems not worth bothering with to me.

Thread tax: The Mag Shack is having a decent sale on Sig 320 magazines. If you're a very dumb faggot like me who for some reason owns that platform but does not like Sig pricing for their mags, it could be worth a look. I've only bought from them once in the past and they did take a week to ship me my order, FYI.

Showing up to a range with a vz 58 was fun, I always ended up getting a nod from the people super into guns. Some would even show me their rare guns/mods.

PA 1x prisms are great, the eye relief is insane. I wish they'd make one without the acss reticle. It's not the best for it's intended design purpose at 1x depending especially on your visual acquity. The tip of the Chevron can be hard to make out at times. Leading me to use more of the upper area of the Chevron instead of just the very tip. I would love to try their magnifier for it, but it's a bit of a meme and I got more important stuff to spend on.

I believe Vortex has some prism optics that have reticle designs that are more of a circle and a dot inside which I think for 1x red dot analog would be preferable. However I can't speak to their quality or reliability. I haven't heard anything bad about them though.

By the way, if anyone wants a really good 22 trainer, especially for draw and duty holsters. The Taurus tx22 will fit in a m&P 1.0/2.0 Safariland ALS holster. the hood will go down and lock. I would recommend getting a Target barrel for it from lakeline. The factory barrels aren't great in terms of accuracy. reliable cheap 22. Sub $300 for a optics ready model now. Great for training on the cheap for a G19 sized gun.

Using a magnifier with a prism optic sounds like a nightmare. You'd have to set the diopter for the prism, then hopefully be able to set the diopter for the magnifier to get a clear sight picture. I've never tried doing this, but I can definitely see potential problems arising.

Primary arms makes one designed for their 1x prism. It's certainly a bit odd, but interesting. Not something I'd pay for, but would like to try.

More than 10 years ago, I was browsing Armslist and saw a S&W Model 500 for sale, .500 S&W Magnum. Advertised as "only one round fired." :story:
 
Glock is partnering with Aimpoint to release a selection of models with slides milled for directly mounting the Aimpoint COA, including the G43X, G48, G19 Gen5, G45, and G47. Rest assured that because it's Aimpoint it's probably going to double the MSRP at the very least.


Mossberg has revealed the new 590 shotgun series with AR-15 ergonomics. Most people are just saying it looks like the Halo shotgun and I think it looks like AIDS. It's only marginally better than previous attempts at making an in-line stock for existing pump actions.

I've actually done that with my M77 and some M14 mags. M77 mags were incredibly expensive for a while (still are but less so now that they're being imported again) so I bought some M14 mags and cut a slot in the back. That's all it is, just a relief at the front where it interfaces with the front trunnion. The rear locks up like it does in the M14. Just for shits and giggles I did it with a promag M14 50 rnd drum mag . The ones without anti-tilt followers work awful but the rest are fine.

AK's are great $700 rifles.

They aren't worth the cost above that, and they were only $700 rifles because they were built by near slave labor (slav labor, heh) and imported. Unfortunately, the AKM suffers from the same issue as the 1911, they have to be built and fitted BY HAND if you want one that actually works worth a fuck. We will never have an American AK for less than $2k that is worth a fuck both due to the fact that you CAN'T used cast parts when the spec calls for forged (looking at you, PSA), and that you have to actually PAY the people who make them.

Even my Russian AK is a piece of shit cosmetically, the paint they use at the factory doesn't even stay on the gun. The ergos are pretty shit (but workable), and now the only people who can really afford to shoot them bought their guns and all of their spam cans of ammo well before the import bans made it cost prohibitive.

And that's before you get into the fact that the AK is more like a submachine gun in an intermediate rifle caliber than a light rifle with a switch. There is a reason why the Russians went to 5.45, and it wasn't due to a lack of 7.62 or rifles that fire it.

With that being said, 7.62 is slow and fat, and does a fine job of imitating a 30-30 "innda woods", especially if you're using any one of the commercial hunting loads available from Hornady.
 
The biggest reason for owning an AK is having it look battleworn, get with the program.

I'll probably hit it with that to fix the finish. The finish is "fine" for a $400 dollar rifle, which it was, when I bought it.

For what they go for now, I would expect a nice, deep blue finish like the old Polytech AK's, but alas, that's not what we're getting for the price premium, we're just getting the exact same rifle, and the piece of mind that it will actually function properly and live as long as Kalishnikov intended because it came out of a real Eastern Euro AK factory, (preferably Bulgarian) or Izhmash (which we can't get anymore, thanks Obama!).

Shit, I would prefer parkerizing to the paint, but it is what it is.
