Does anyone in this thread know of any good videos or playlists on youtube (preferably) or somewhere else that break down the AR-15? Like a good in-depth guide on components, operation, and maintenance? I've been looking for a good series to show a family member of mine that I'm teaching to shoot, but youtube's search algorithm is so fucking gay that all I can find is grifters trying to sell me lowers and optics.
SOTAR and as the other user said Small arms solutions who's written an entire book about the AR to follow up with Ezells original book, he has worked at Colt and others and knows a fuck ton and was there himself during many key periods. Personally not a fan of Mrgunsngear but that's due to his fear mongering clickbait, and not his gun knowledge.

S&W, in cooperation with Lipsey's has ressureceted the model 629 "mountain gun". A .44 magnum with a tapered light weight barrel designed for carry in the bush. it makes for a very well balanced .44. the gun features fancy wood grips made by tyler gun works.

They have also brought back the 686+ mountain gun as well. neither feature a hillary hole.

To this day I'm asshurt I didn't get the 617 Mountain gun

To THIS DAY

Andrew seems like a cool guy.
I think he's great. I've interacted with him for years on IG, well before OCL was a thing. We used to shoot the shit about powerlifting and steroids. I don't know him in real life, we're just IG pals. I think I'll purchase one of his 7.62 Infinity suppressors.
the reticle ruins the entire thing.
That's my biggest complaint about Vudu 1-10X scopes. They're pretty damn good all around but those fucking reticles!
Mateba carbines
Dude, I don't know how you do it but you find the most niche firearms stuff available. If Sherlock Holmes was a real person that lived today even he'd be awed by your autistic detective skills.
Yeah, but it's not like you'd have to shoot it all the time. Would be particularly nice in SBRs. Everyone loves how handy their sub-13.7" barrels are, but velocities out of them aren't so hot.
I don't get these barrel lengths. It's one thing to default to either a 16" barrel because fuck the whole SBR stamp thing, or a pinned and welded 14.5 because one still wants a legally compliant clone rifle build. But 13.7"? I say if one wants a legit SBR for either a truck rifle or because they plan on shooting people inside buildings, why not just get an 11.5" in 5.56 or a 8.5-10" in .300 BLK?
mediocre accuracy with bizarre inverted sights, stapler trigger, extremely robust and reliable, works very well as a post sample (i have a converted VP70Z with the VP70M's stock and modified the slide to accept it together with a shop made disconnector). it's also heavy, clunky and awkward to hold. i got it due to seeing "Aliens" in theater rather than the Resident Evil games, but it's a cool gun nonetheless.
Why am I not surprised you have this? It wouldn't be surprising to learn you had a Mateba and/or a Mateba carbine, too.

I came here to post about this very thing. Part of me likes the idea of this one, especially the tapered barrel and the 3/4 length underlug. The front sight is alright, too. But how will these be priced and will it be competitive with the Colt Anaconda? Those of you that know this stuff better than I do, please chime in.

Ty and other poster for suggestions. So far I'm liking what the Ivan guy has to say, I watched one of his other vids about ARs. I think he gets a bit too autistic when he's arguing with people in his comments though as far as 'what is the definition of sabotage?' lol but he ain't bad. I don't know enough about Small Arms Solutions, but I found him arguing with people in the comments of other people's ar-15 videos (Fullspectrum being one of them, idk where his kiwi account went). I guess his career at Colt wasn't really as illustrious as he likes to claim? But idk.

one of the few guns i now will buy for personal use. i had a weird model 25-5 back in the day in .45 Colt with a heavy barrel and N frame with bobbed hammer. it was my father's and used as a bush gun when hunting dangerous game. having one in .44 is a win for me since that's my preferred cartridge. might see if there's an option to get a 4-3/8" and mag-na-port it, to make a mean little boar defense carry piece.
MSRP is 1,199$. The Colt is going to be a bit better made in my opinion, and much stronger.
if i'm carrying it, my muscle memory pushes the cylinder release, not pull, so i prefer S&W

Now for the real questions, I'll be building a 6.5mm CM rifle in a chassis master this year.

It'll probably be a Tikka T3x ctr 24 inch plus.... Either a KRG X ray or a KRG whiskey 3 chassis.

X-ray is lighter and more plastic, X-ray is heavier and more aluminum.

Between the two, which one or should I go with another brand?
either will be fine imho, although the aluminum might be better for all-terrain if it's bedded to an aluminum block. i recently built some stuff off the MDT Oryx chassis and they're pretty good as a sharpshooter type short action use-case. i've built off both Howa 1500 and Tikka T3 in them for 1km guns.

It wouldn't be surprising to learn you had a Mateba and/or a Mateba carbine, too.
i do have a Unica 6 Hunter in matte/satin nickel imported through Pars international. bought it in Brescia Italy and returned with it on a flight with a form 6. iirc my specific combo of finish, caliber, barrel length, and features is rare since it's not a catalog option but you had to piece it together or buy direct from the factory. the "rare-ness" is pretty low-key though. most Hunters are bright nickel vs satin for example.

I'm trying to find that particular casio. It seems to be a flavor of the Casio AE1200.
Casio AE1300WH.
The AE1200 is one of my favorite watches ever concieved.

I built one with the shiny stainless, sapphire crystal, and titanium watch back.
I put it on one of these Vario straps.
It has been through absolute hell. Hunting, fishing, work. Falling out of a treestand and smashing it on a rock 15-20 feet down. And still looks like the day I put it together.
I put an amber colored film on the inside to help with day reading and blind angles. In fact, my FIL and MIL went on a vacation to NZ and Aussie land for a few weeks and asked to borrow a watch so that cellphones weren't fucking him on timing, and he put it through it's paces in the outback and diving. Still looks brand new. He's asked me to build him one when he gets back.
The world timer is the ultimate watch in terms of bang for buck. Crazy the amount of worth a 30 dollar watch has. I recommend all kiwis get one to throw in a go bag. Has more features than you would ever need, and a 10+ year battery life.
If Casio would offer it in stainless with a sapphire crystal, it would easily be worth $400 as a "luxury" tool watch.
People have asked me why I spent $200+ on a $30 dollar watch. My answer is that I turned a $30 dollar watch into the ultimate tool watch for $230 bucks.

I put a VFG on my AR and put a free Streamlight on it. The bolts for the Mlok stuff cost $7 and the grip and bracket were 3d printed. I spray painted it because I looked cool like this and I had to cover up where I took an angle grinder to the charging handle. The light is an incandescent antique, but with some batteries it works. Gotta piss with the dick you got.

I don't know all the lore on 13.7" but I believe it was popularized by Noveske a while back, as you could pin and weld their Flaming Pig flash can on a 13.7" barrel. It was then re-popularized by Sons of Liberty Gunworks because you can P&W their NOX hybrid muzzle device. KAC's recent KS-1 rifle for the British military also has a 13.7" barrel.

These days you mostly see companies selling 13.9" barrels instead of 13.7" because it opens up more muzzle devices for P&W possibilities, including several Surefire muzzle devices (the 3 and 4 prong flash hiders, Warcomp and muzzle break) and the Dead Air 3 prong flash hider.

Really though, most suppressor mounts out there only work with 14.5" barrels for P&W, so unless you're really dedicated to Surefire or Keymo compatible suppressors it's still best to just get a 14.5".

I will never not think Case less is cool shit.
its interesting how technology changes - and doesn't at the same time.

Case less ammunition was common for firearms in the 1850's and 60's. particularly in revolvers. Hazard's patent compressed cartridges is one example. combustible cartridges were common as well, in which the case is consumed by the firing of the arm. this principle is still used with artillery and MBT main guns. then the brass cartridge case came along and blew caseless out of the water.

Same story for smokeless powder. the basic chemistry was known as far back as the 1840's, but the chemists at the time could not make a storage safe powder and accidental explosions were fairly common. The Austrians still adopted this smokeless cartridge for their muzzleloading musket anyway for a time until advances in black powder composition rendered it obsolete. it was called "gun-cotton" cotton material was washed in a propellant bath, trapping propellant in the cotton which could be ignited and consumed by firing. like i mentioned earlier, it was pretty unstable. in a musket cartridge its not too dangerous but in a ammunition depot it was quite dangerous. gun-cotton was used a lot in sea-mines and torpedoes because it was immune to water damage.

I've looked at the Oryx. Interesting although it's almost a hybrid between a chassis and a fancy rifle stock "chassis". It also locks you into the MDT ecosystem hardcore.

KRG has been around for longer afaik and it's American vs Canuk. I'll get hands on if possible and go from there.

Then of course Tikka drops the damn Ace series

Target and Game series.... Starting at $1750 so $500 or so more than a T3X. Their chassis is proprietary with essentially zero accessories as of now as it's brand new

You're welcome. Watches and horology are my second hobby along with guns and gunsmithing.
I've got tons and tons of vintage and luxury watches I've repaired and am fond of, but the world timer is literally the best watch ever made from almost every angle.
The only downside (if you consider it that) is that the watch comes from Casio in a resin case with an acrylic crystal. Literally popping it into one of those kits and making it sapphire and stainless makes it into an indestructible do everything watch that lasts forever.
For $30 bucks, there's no reason NOT to have one. If you aren't a watch guy, the World Timer will make you one.
