that's true in some states, i've also been informed it started as a way to have "shotgun only" regulation while not outlawing high brass shotshells that used slugs or musketballs. also i've taken game with 45-70 at around 200 meters or more (buffalo, southern CA). much further than that and you're not in mountains has me questioning the safety/humanity of the shot.

it doesn't make sense at all. .45-70 is a 1,000 yard cartridge.

You can squeeze more out of it if you use a lighter bullet and a heavier powder charge. That's what .308 does.

Drop don't matter when you can adjust sights to compensate.

Well, I guess for those guys there is (usually) an alternative anyways. Can't hurt, although I really hope it doesn't have an effect on pricing. I'd hate to see kits jump $200 because they now come with a free shit pipe. If I'm paying an extra $200+ it's for the actually usable barrel and not a pit filled smooth bore.

1. Are there any flash signature problems caused by the forward venting nature of the HK416 gas block?
2. How badly does the rearward movement of the piston expose the support hand to carbon? That is, how many rounds/mags until things start getting sooty or do the gas rings largely prevent it?
3. For a completely different question, do you have any idea how the secondary retention mechanism on the old Sig SRD cans worked? I've looked at every photo and watched about just every video and can't identify any kind of feature the little nub could lock on to.

So Freedom Ordnance recently announced they're going to start production of their redesigned FM-9 belt-fed 9mm AR. Think of the ARES Shrike/Fitelite MCR, but 9mm. Their old one was just an upper, but the latest one will also offer a complete rifle that can feed from GLOCK mags as well as belts. It will also be compatible with most popular FRTs. I gotta admit, I want it. If they're going to offer uppers along with the complete rifles then I might have to try to get one, if the price isn't too insane. I've got a Lancer AR lower that I still need to build up. This with an FRT would be a helluva lotta fun.

Scored a DD M4A1 (lightly used) with $1000~ worth of upgrades for $1000 and my g45 COA in trade. I always dreamed of being the one to walk into a shop and see an absolutely insane deal... The only thing I'm not crazy about is that it's got a cryptek cerakote that I'm going to paint over as soon as I can.

When Freedom Ord had their first FM-9 upper in production, they were selling for around $2500. Certainly not cheap, but considering it's one of the few belt-fed options around, and pretty cheap to shoot, it's not too bad. If they bring it up to $3000 for the upper I may still consider it, but hopefully it will be closer to their original version in price.

Edit: semi-auto .22lrs are just plain fun. You can shoot them tons for dirt cheap, and just blast away as fast as you can pull the trigger totally guilt-free. Add a suppressor and now you're really cooking.

I do not understand the current fad of putting the short barrel on the long grip. I cannot think of anything I want less in a handgun than compact grip size combined with subcompact barrel and slide length. I have a G26, I have a G19, if I were to combine the two it would be the G19 slide on the G26 frame, not the other way around. Barrel length has far less impact on concealability than grip length. The 45, 43X and 19X make no sense to me, and I wonder how they made the 45 a tiny bit longer than the 19, despite having the exact same barrel length.

Shorter barrel = less weight. normal grip = more control.

I remember watching Ian's video years ago about drum mags and why nobody uses them. If I remember, reliability was a big issue with those.

Has anything changed in the years since that video was made? Are drum mags more reliable now? Is it possible to use the gases from the shot to assist mechanically in the operation of a drum mag?

When they are reliable they're still annoying to carry, I think that was his eventual conclusion after the WWSD project tentatively included a Magdul D-60 for "first contact".
As an aside, modern drum magazines are more or less okay, lots of issues stem from drums in guns with magwells and rounds binding while going up the chute, for lack of a better term.

It's a competition thing that people misunderstood as being good for carry.

Long grip - easier to hold, especially with the support hand.
Short barrel (actually short slide) - less reciprocating mass, faster cycling.

The main benefits of long slides, velocity and sight radius, are irrelevant for optics divisions.

You're 100% correct that when concealing, the limiting factor is grip length, not barrel length.
