The Oak was near shaking with the amount of
S. Carolinensis crowding it's branches. The discarded pieces of acorn sounded like falling rain on the forest floor, which is what I listen for on a hunt. This early in season the dense canopy only provides fleeting glimpses of the squirrels as they jump from branch to branch so you have to be ready to take a quick shot.
And i did. A large male stopped on a branch with a nut in his hands, so I drew back the right hammer on my old Husqvarna hammer gun and aimed for his head.
BANG!
He fell from his perch like a piece of falling Iron with a thud. the rest of the squirrels went into hiding at the disruption so I traipsed over to where i guessed he came to rest. Only to find two lying there dead. Both male of species. The larger one was my target. the smaller a bonus. I can only theorize that The unfortunate bystander was behind my target and caught some collateral shot. Only one pellet of #6 shot was lodged in his chest cavity. Truly a unlucky feller indeed.
Ammunition used: Baschieri & Pellagri Upland Game Classic, 2 1/2 inch shells with 1oz of #6 shot at 1,160 FPS. 12 gauge of course.
Go hunting frens. its fun.
